Imbue: Coffee Table

Imbue: Coffee Table

Irish woodworker John Doolin reveals a religious devotion to quality construction with the single-form Imbue coffee table (24" x 48"). Contrasting oak and walnut embellish the various components and master joinery, and coincidentally effect a cruciform shape.

The forward-thinkers at Bernhardt Design Press are smart enough to look out behind. Thus was born their Art Center College of Design Collection, crafted by students from the renowned Los Angeles art school. The Edge chair by industrial-design student Justin Porcano is all cushioned angles: upholstered leather or fabric cushions atop a wide, slant-legged, solid walnut shell. Back and seat cushions extend slightly past the edge of the frame (particularly kind to the back of the knee), perhaps the detail for which the chair is named. A longitudinal section of claro walnut mounted atop a pair of cast bronze “wishbones”? is a table for the ages. Claro walnut typically refers to trunk wood from the West Coast’s centuries-old trees. Dense and richly variegated, slow-growing claro is often used for gunstocks and musical instruments, its marbleized grains making a big statement in a small area. This 14.5-foot-long table may also be ordered with a trestle base, often one made from the same tree.
