The Four Feathers DVD

This is a great movie....it's has adventure, drama and there's a war going on...the tag line is Freedom. Country. Honor. Passion. To save his best friend, one man must risk everything he loves...oh swoon!

  • A movie about Iraq soldiers who have to go back even when their tour is up. Ryan Phillipe and Channing Tatum are studs in this movie.

  • I remember seeing this film in the theater and literally rolling from laughter. Heath Ledger is of course brilliant. But even more it is a comedy of unexpected wit and much more than just a pun on knights.

Christian Bale is a kid in this movie... and you know he's going to be something when he grows up ... the movie is superb and he is spectacular. Roundly dismissed as one of Steven Spielberg's least successful efforts, this very underrated film poignantly follows the World War II adventures of young Jim (a brilliant Christian Bale), caught in the throes of the fall of China. What if you once had everything and lost it all in an afternoon? What if you were only 12? Bale's transformation, from pampered British ruling-class child to an imprisoned, desperate, nearly feral boy, is nothing short of stunning. Also stunning are exceptional sets, cinematography, and music (the last courtesy of John Williams) that enhance author J.G. Ballard's and screenwriter Tom Stoppard's depiction of another, less familiar casualty of war. In a time when competitors were releasing "comedic," derivative coming-of-age films, Empire of the Sun stands out as an epic in the classic David Lean sense--despite confusion or perceived competition with the equally excellent The Last Emperor (also released in 1987, and also a coming-of-age in a similar setting). It is also a remarkable testament to, yes, the human spirit. And despite its disappointing box-office returns, Empire of the Sun helped to further establish Spielberg as more than a commercial director and set the standard, tone, and look for future efforts Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan.

I didn't think I'd like another P&P version other than the classic with Laurence Olivier but this one is lovely. I like how for a period piece it keeps everything "real" down to the mud at the bottom of the girls' gowns as they traipse through the mud during their walks through the countryside. And Keira Knightley isn't annoying in this at all.

A Very Long Engagment (Un long dimanche de fiançailles) is a film about love, war, and many other things I probably missed. It's a beautiful film with amazing scenery, cinematography, plot (good, even though it's complicated) and acting. The film is about Manche and Mathilde, whom we follow (with digressions) throughout the movie. Manche and Mathilde are engaged, but World War I rips them apart. The film tells their story; one of hope, searching and intrigue, while giving the viewer a feel for the senseless, ugly war that destroyed a beautiful Europe. What is beautiful about this film is the range of emotions and situations it covers: Love, war, happiness, comedy, pathos - quite a few. The scenery is amazing and make you feel transported to the pre-war, rural and urban European era. The director is Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who made Amelie, which is probably why Mathilde is played by Audrey Tautou (of Amelie fame) and contains many of the bit players from that film. It's an enchanting film that I recommend watching, even though it's a bit long (133 minutes). In French with English subtitles.

  • An incredible performance by Heath Ledger, RIP. Such a beautiful, moving work.
