Jacques Etoile Lunamatic Silver Dial

Jacques Etoile Lunamatic Silver Dial

I just love the design of this watch. It's dressy but has some playfulness to it. It's not a modern design at all, but you don't need modern for EVERYTHING.... It's made by Jacques Etoile, a German watchmaking brand that is relatively young. Naturally, it's an automatic. What I like about the dial are the brushed silver circles, the 2 moons rotating in their displays (the top shows how the moon appears in the Northern hemisphere, the bottom, the Southern) and the analog date counter (the bottom dial), a very unusual feature. I think it's quite classy and pretty at the same time. Not to pricey considering what the Swiss brands cost.

At a stately 35 mm in diameter, this watch is a classy little number that stands in stark contrast to the dinner-plate sized watches of today. It's got a beautifully tinted silver dial with simple hour markers and slim, elegant hands. Viewable from the sapphire glass case-back is Nomos's Alpha movement, a manual wind movement made entirely by Nomos in Glashütte, Germany. A timeless dress watch perfect for any gentleman.

Where in the good lord's name do you go that you need that kind of water resistance?? Still, it's a pretty slick looking divers watch. It measures 44 mm in diameter. The steel used in the construction of the watch is 6 times harder than regular stainless steel. It's got a top-notch, anti-glare sapphire crystal. To maintain water-resistance, the watch contains copper sulphate capsules to absorb humidity and is filled with argon to equalize the pressure. It's anti-magnetic as well and has an operating range of -45º C to + 80º C. Best of all, you can use the chronograph underwater - the buttons won't leak. So yeah, you can take this pretty much anywhere. $4,360.

A lean and clean motorsports-inspired German chronograph powered by an automatic movement with day/date display. The internals provide precise timekeeping in the case of an understated looker. The stainless steel case is a black/silver/black steel sandwich with a red tachymeter register on the black matte bezel. The deep black face has red and white dial markings, luminous hands, and a needle-slender red sweep seconds hand. The strap is black leather with matching red stitching, secured by a deployant clasp. Sharp. The effect is finished off with red coral inlays capping the screw-down crown and pushers. Subtle, precise, masculine and sweet. For a more assertive take on the same functionality, check out Temption's Curare Classic Chronograph -- all black with yellow markings, just like the curare frog that inspired it. Temption is an interesting German watch company. It is not building watches for status-seekers. It designs and builds contemporary watches influenced by Bauhaus and WabiSabi design principles, in an effort to offer lasting value and style. The founder emphasizes simplicity, legibility and build integrity in every design. Want exclusivity? Temption only makes 700 watches per year. Get one.

German watchmakers often have a leaner, more austere aesthetic than their Swiss counterparts, in whose shadow they toil. But this creates alternatives for you that are very high quality, affordable, leverage Swiss internals, and are distinctive enough to set you apart. This Jorg Schauer Kalisse is a good example. This is an automatic mechanical chronograph with a beautiful, simple dial for precise reading of elapsed time. The case is stainless steel, hand-finished to a matte ground, with a striking screw-attached bezel. The crystal is slightly-domed sapphire and there is a display case-back revealing the decorated movement. A leather strap is standard, with stainless steel bracelet options offered. Other Kulisse models offer white faces with blue hands, as well as additional complications. This is the cleanest, meanest Kulisse.

Sinn of Germany is a highly respected watch brand, but their prices are certainly more in line than their Swiss colleague's offerings. The Frankfurt Am Main collection is made for the man on the go and with money on his mind. With a total of 4 time zones, the wearer can easily discern when Abu Dabhi's market just opened. Also has an included chronograph in case he feels like timing those short rallies on the Dow Jones and stuff. Classic black dial, stainless steel bracelet and 38.5 mm case diameter. He'll keep his clients guessing as to what brand he is wearing; tell them he had it custom made :)
