Souad Massi's "Raoui" came out at a time when I wanted to return to non-American music, but I was looking for something that sounded complete, something with soul, something that was going to take me deeper into contemporary music without gimmicks. I listened to a stack of albums in the "World Music" section at the Virgin Mega Store and after nearly abandoning my search I came across the inspired talent of Souad Massi from Algeria. Souad Massi's sound is sometimes described as Algerian folk/rock, this maybe somewhat true, I'm not sure what to call it. I'm attracted to her lamentful ballads as well as her more urgent themes. Description Debut album by Algerian vocalist who is based in Paris. Thealbum fuses North African styles with western pop and folk, utilising both the acoustic guitar and the oud. Massi composed each of the songs and delivers them in either French or Arabic.

Variation is good, especially when it comes from musicians who's songs are as additive as they are crucial, Bob Marley is one of the few in this category. Lucky for me he and his friends have recorded a host of songs as well as different versions of those same song, which means I'm still discovering new ways of enjoying the Marley sound. "Bob Marley & Friends" is a 29 track collection featuring a number of rare and alternative cuts, including the original version of 'Duppy Conqueror', 'African Herbsman' and '(Don't) Rock My Boat'.

Sci-Fi Crimes song titles like “Roswell” and “Highlands Apparition” have the same guys who delivered 2004’s dynamically crunchy This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In) and the melodic heaviosity of 2007’s Vena Sera gone conspiracy-theory flaky, wearing tinfoil hats and praying to Mr. Spock. In November of 1970 James Taylor and Carole King first performed together at the Troubadour on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, California. Taylor had just released his debut album for the Beatles' newly formed Apple Records and King was finding her way as a first time solo performer even though by then she was a famous songwriter with a string of hits for other artists. When they returned to the club for a two-week co-headlining run in 1971 their lives were somewhat different. That summer Taylor's "Fire and Rain" was topping the charts and King's landmark Tapestry was on its way to making her a music superstar. Thirty-six years later, in November 2007, James Taylor, Carole King and members of their renowned original band "The Section" (featuring guitarist Danny Kortchmar, bassist Leland Sklar and drummer Russell Kunkel) returned to the Troubadour for a three-night, six-show run to celebrate the venue's 50th anniversary. Those historic shows are documented in Live at the Troubadour, a special 2-disc CD/DVD. This remarkable recording, culled from these unforgettable shows, features 15 songs and 75 minutes of pristine video and audio including stunning performances of the pair's most beloved hits such as Carole King's "So Far Away," "It's Too Late," and "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?" as well as James Taylor's "Carolina in My Mind," "Sweet Baby James," and "Fire and Rain," to name just a few. Mercedes Sosa passed today at 74, but her music will live forever. Forced to leave her native country of Argentina to Europe when the military government went after the activists, artists and anyone who they thought were dissidents of their government. This story happened in the 70s when thousands of young people were slaughtered and dump into lagoons and in the ocean. Poet and activist Victor Jara was also killed around this time in his native Chile. These were rough times in South America, the struggle for many is still very much alive today for many of the children and parents of those taken away 30 plus years ago.

Check out what Amazon said: This six-foot-tall goddess is indisputably one of modern Africa's greatest singers. Her magnificent, throaty alto and exotic yet accessible style have already won her an impressive international following. Oumou's lyrics are nearly as compelling as her voice and person; her open affirmation of female sensuality and diatribes against polygamy have irritated conservative elders but delighted her contemporaries. She is an exponent of the blues-like Wassoulou tradition, which takes its name from a province in Southern Mali. The region's music is based upon Asian-sounding five-tone scales and is usually accompanied by the resonant kamelengoni (a six-stringed hunters' harp) and searing, earthy fiddles, while jaunty polyrhythms are marked by wood drums, metal scrapers, and/or shakers. This double album constitutes an ideal introduction. It contains a twelve-track "greatest hits" package (picked from her first three albums, Moussoulou, Ko Sira, and Worotan) plus eight new tunes that have never before been available on CD.

Here's what Other Music had to say: Argentinean singer-songwriter Juana Molina is an originator. A sound pioneer. She's the only artist we know that could somehow justifiably be compared to Animal Collective, Bebel Gilberto, Bjork, Beth Orton, and Red House Painters. On her fifth full-length, "Un Dia," Molina’s voice is carried like a buoy, and her distinct, animated lyrical phrasing contributes a unique percussive element to each song.
