Tala Matrix: Tabla Beat Science Live in San Francisco at Stern Grove

This is a global super-group of some of the greatest percussionists and classical instrumentalists from India paired with younger generation drum and bass musicians and producers (US and India). Formally, this is a Bill Laswell project, but like good art, this collective transcends any one person or idea. It is probably one of the most important percussion and modern drum and bass collectives to exist in our time! Forget my words. Listen! classical to hyper modern. It's all there, plus a massive Soul. enjoy

A quick glance at the fifth Epic album by Chicago-based rock trio Chevelle may give their legions of longtime fans pause. Sci-Fi Crimes song titles like “Roswell” and “Highlands Apparition” have the same guys who delivered 2004’s dynamically crunchy This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In) and the melodic heaviosity of 2007’s Vena Sera gone conspiracy-theory flaky, wearing tinfoil hats and praying to Mr. Spock. Hard work, determination and success go hand and hand—and no one understands that better than STORY OF THE YEAR. In that spirit it should come as no surprise that these post-hardcore sensations decided to title their fourth full-length The Constant. However that doesn’t mean that the band’s latest disc isn’t a logical progression for St. Louis’ favorite breakout act. Taken from Amazon.com

In November of 1970 James Taylor and Carole King first performed together at the Troubadour on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, California. Taylor had just released his debut album for the Beatles' newly formed Apple Records and King was finding her way as a first time solo performer even though by then she was a famous songwriter with a string of hits for other artists. When they returned to the club for a two-week co-headlining run in 1971 their lives were somewhat different. That summer Taylor's "Fire and Rain" was topping the charts and King's landmark Tapestry was on its way to making her a music superstar. Thirty-six years later, in November 2007, James Taylor, Carole King and members of their renowned original band "The Section" (featuring guitarist Danny Kortchmar, bassist Leland Sklar and drummer Russell Kunkel) returned to the Troubadour for a three-night, six-show run to celebrate the venue's 50th anniversary. Those historic shows are documented in Live at the Troubadour, a special 2-disc CD/DVD. This remarkable recording, culled from these unforgettable shows, features 15 songs and 75 minutes of pristine video and audio including stunning performances of the pair's most beloved hits such as Carole King's "So Far Away," "It's Too Late," and "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?" as well as James Taylor's "Carolina in My Mind," "Sweet Baby James," and "Fire and Rain," to name just a few. Mercedes Sosa passed today at 74, but her music will live forever. Forced to leave her native country of Argentina to Europe when the military government went after the activists, artists and anyone who they thought were dissidents of their government. This story happened in the 70s when thousands of young people were slaughtered and dump into lagoons and in the ocean. Poet and activist Victor Jara was also killed around this time in his native Chile. These were rough times in South America, the struggle for many is still very much alive today for many of the children and parents of those taken away 30 plus years ago.

I originally got hooked on Thievery Corporation after hearing one of their tracks in the background of an "Alias" episode that took place in Morocco. But that was like trying to understand Spanish by learning to say, "Hola!" The depth and breadth of Thievery's music cuts across so many genres and cultures that it could be dubbed "world music." But the electronic undertones give it an entirely 21st century twist. Take a listen if you haven't already.
