In February, 1942 three hand-picked bomber crews were trained in photo-reconnaissance. These men were to fly modified B-17 aircraft far beyond design safety factors and well over maximum wartime weight limits. The photos of Japanese targets were an absolute necessity for the famous Doolittle Bombing Raid weeks later. Fictional themes woven into the plot include: a young woman pilot hoping to become a WASP – Women Air Service Pilot, enlists the help of Eleanor Roosevelt; a young Nisei woman, born in California, tries to escape incarceration in the Manzanar Detention Camp; an actual double agent in the White House, eventually exposed by Allen Dulles. In March 1942 the three B-17s took off from Wright Field, Ohio. Two of the planes were eliminated en route and, after long, exhausting hours in the air, the third crew photographed Tokyo, then flew another 2700 miles to land at an uncompleted Navy field at Dutch Harbor. A month later, April 18, 1942, sixteen B-25 bombers were launched from the USS HORNET. The ‘DOOLITTLE RAID’ was on its way to bomb Japan. The eye-witness, an Army Air Corps Captain in 1941, retired from government service 40 years later. His last job was Director of the famous Lockheed ‘Skunk Works’ (builder of the U2 spy plane).

  • If nothing else, it's the most intense movie I've seen in a long while. As always, it's a brilliant performance from Kate Winslet. Admittedly though, it's not the storyline for my taste, but it's a film I'd feel bad not owning.

The Criterion Collection have done much for the home cinema experience, beyond the selection of must-see film, and the care taken in reproducing immaculate sound and picture, Criterion also creates wonderful packaging for each DVD. One of my favorites is Andrei Tarkovsky's 1962 film "Ivan’s Childhood". About the film: The debut feature from the great Andrei Tarkovsky, Ivan’s Childhood is an evocative, poetic journey through the shadows and shards of one boy’s war-torn youth. Moving back and forth between the traumatic realities of WWII and the serene moments of family life before the conflict began, Tarkovsky’s film remains one of the most jarring and unforgettable depictions of the impact of violence on children in wartime.

While on the march, she meets Joe Harman, an Australian POW who is driving trucks for the Japanese. He speaks fondly of the town of Alice Springs, which he frequented. Joe helps the ladies, and steals black chickens from the Japanese commander's flock for food and is punished by crucifixion. Jean assumed that he died. After the war, she relocates to England. Several years later, after she comes into a fortune, Jean returns to Malaysia to build a well and wash house for the village that sheltered her and friends for three years. There she discovers that Joe didn’t die and sets out to Australia to find him. Joe, in the meantime, has gone to London using earnings from a lottery to find Jean, after he discovers that she was not a married woman. They do find each other, and Jean relocates to Australia to recreate A Town Like Alice in dusty Willstown, the nearest town to Midhurst, where Joe ranches. Jean is a clerk/typist from England working for a leather goods company in Malaya when the story begins. Jean demonstrates resourcefulness and fortitude when a POW and later in the outback. When building a Town Like Alice in Willstown, she demonstrates a flair for entrenpreneurship. Joe, despite his machismo, encourages Jean in her entrepreneurial ventures. The story is narrated by Noel Strachan, who is trustee for Jean’s fortune. He is forty years older than Jean and became very fond of her, actually an unrequited love. I love a great romance, where the man and woman meet, are separated, and reunite despite overwhelming odds. I first loved the Masterpiece Theater TV series with Helen Morse and Bryan Brown. Then I happened upon the 1956 movie with Virginia McKenna and Peter Finch when it was shown on TCM recently. I knew it was time for me to read the book.

I still quote the movie at random, sometimes inappropriate times. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure there is anything funnier than a kid sitting in church and then suddenly standing up and yelling, "Jesus, you magnificent bastard, I read your book!" Of course, then my father's belt "went through me like crap through a goose," but oh, wasn't it worth it... This collector's edition has restored the movie to nearly modern-day quality, and has a bunch of features and bonuses. It's sitting on my shelf, begging me to watch it right now...

Christian Bale is a kid in this movie... and you know he's going to be something when he grows up ... the movie is superb and he is spectacular. Roundly dismissed as one of Steven Spielberg's least successful efforts, this very underrated film poignantly follows the World War II adventures of young Jim (a brilliant Christian Bale), caught in the throes of the fall of China. What if you once had everything and lost it all in an afternoon? What if you were only 12? Bale's transformation, from pampered British ruling-class child to an imprisoned, desperate, nearly feral boy, is nothing short of stunning. Also stunning are exceptional sets, cinematography, and music (the last courtesy of John Williams) that enhance author J.G. Ballard's and screenwriter Tom Stoppard's depiction of another, less familiar casualty of war. In a time when competitors were releasing "comedic," derivative coming-of-age films, Empire of the Sun stands out as an epic in the classic David Lean sense--despite confusion or perceived competition with the equally excellent The Last Emperor (also released in 1987, and also a coming-of-age in a similar setting). It is also a remarkable testament to, yes, the human spirit. And despite its disappointing box-office returns, Empire of the Sun helped to further establish Spielberg as more than a commercial director and set the standard, tone, and look for future efforts Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan.
