Description

The Tonner Doll Company makes these incredibly detailed Wizard of Oz dolls. I mean everything--from the Tin Man, Dorothy and the Cowardly Lion to "Ozmopolitan" citizens.

Sorta makes me hanker for my complete L. Frank Baum Oz book series. And wonder how cool a Tick Tock doll or one of those trees that grew lunch pails would look if the Tonner people decided to go there.

Kwanzaa decorations include fruits and vegetables laid out on a mkeka (straw mat or cloth.) Specifically, you're going to need one ear of corn for each child in the family. If there are no kids, you'll just be using the 2 ears of corn. The corn goes on either side of the mkeka. They'll flank the Kinara, which is the candleholder with 7 candles, one per Kwanzaa principle. (phew!)

The other fruits and vegetables go in the mazao (basket). Traditional inclusions are pumpkins, squash, bananas and sweet potatoes--and whatever else you like. Since these are seasonal, the LocalHarvest stores should have them available for home delivery, so that you can focus on the rest of your Kwanzaa decorations!

Description

During Kwanzaa, gifts are exchanged--gifts called zawadi--that embody the Kwanzaa principle of Kuumba, which is CREATIVITY.

I love this puzzle because it's interlocking animals (who doesn't love animals!) which are fun to put together, but also encourage curiosity and imagination in your kid.

Incidentally, while we're on topic, Kwanzaa gifts are given based on merit. So kids don't just expect to get gifts, they know they have to earn them.

(Like the Santa lump-of-coal system used to be, back when gas was 10 cents a gallon and kids had to walk 5 miles uphill (both ways) to school in the snow every day.)

Kwanzaa Decorations: Hand Carved Unity Cup

Some Kwanzaa 101:

Okay, so on the sixth day of Kwanzaa (in addition to lighting the appropriate candle of the Kinara) there's the Karamu feast, which includes a libation ritual--the tambiko--that is performed with a unity cup.

This one is hand-carved in Ghana, West Africa. When not in use, the cup can take its place amidst other Kwanzaa Decorations.
