Little Apocalypse (Richard Snyder Publication) Wendy Battin: Books
First to recommend
Description
This book is one of the unsung treasures of contemporary American poetry. Instead of nostalgia and self-promotion, we find true visionary work, lyricism. intelligence, heart and the longing for a richer world and deeper, brighter humanity on every page. These are poems that demand to be read over and over, since they unfold their riches and song more with each reading. Worth reading. Worth learning by heart--you won't exhaus them.

Dmitri Shostakovich: 24 Preludes and Fugues Op 87 / Keith Jarrett
First to recommend
Description
If you've heard Keith Jarrett's jazz, you already know his extraordinary piano improvisations. On this two-CD set from ECM, Jarrett goes classical, and his solo work on the Shostakovich Preludes and Fugues is as deeply textured and expressive as his Koln and Paris concerts.

krishna das - Pilgrim Heart
2 people recommended this item
Description
Some of these chants--"Devi Puja" and "Om Namah Shivaya," especially--are pure unembellished devotion, riding on Krishna Das's soulful voice. Others are more east/west fusion, sometimes energetic, sometimes light and whimsical, with vocal help from Sting and from a female chorus. If you're a traditionalist, the range might annoy you. If you're open to some heart-opening play, though, you'll find it here.

Time and Materials: Poems 1997-2005: Robert Hass: Books
First to recommend
Description
Robert Hass is one of those rare American poets who never fall back into formula, the familiar self-parodies that litter most poets' careers. His newest book, Time and Materials, is as rich and multi-layered as the others, and each poem has the feel of art newly minted. The intelligence of mind and heart and body, of keen observation and linguistic music, are everywhere present.

Description
A fine novel, part murder mystery, part meditation on art and language, part investigation of what happens at the crossroads of cultures, this is Pamuk's most beguiling work.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Description
Buy the Ultimate Edition on DVD--the Director's Cut and special features are more than worth it. This is Spielberg's best work, rich, complex, visually stunning. What it says about art, music, the human soul, is so perfectly embodied in narrative that it bears watching again and and again, like a poem that isn't exhausted once you have it by heart.

Maha Mat: Lightweight,Cushioned Yoga Mat from Germany
First to recommend
Description
This is the best yoga mat I've found--so durable that it's lasted through 6 years of daily practice, but light enough to be carried to the 9 classes I teach every week. Its textured surface provides good traction, even in hot classes. The dense foam is comfortable without extra bulk or padding.

Amazon Kindle Wireless Reading Device

Description
My husband works with emerging technology, so he often has access to tech gadgets (hence, so do I). Compared to the iRex iLiad, the usability of the Kindle is definitely a huge improvement. Increasing font size is easy and having Next and Prev buttons are nice. I do think the right-side Next button is located in an odd spot -- if you hold it with your right hand you may accidentally click it. Another improvement is the selection roller, which I can't explain how weird it is but it works well for navigating menus. I haven't spent much time using the Kindle to access the internet, but it's a nice feature to have if you need to quickly get to sites like Google Maps (possible because of the built in GPS) and other pages formatted for mobile browser.

The Senseo Single Serve Gourmet Coffeemaker

Description
Who needs Starbucks? The best coffee I've ever made at home comes from the Senseo. Each cup comes with rich taste and a creamy head, always fresh. The coffee pods aren't cheap, but if you'd rather have quality than quantity, the Senseo is the way to go.
