Fred Water

Description

Since water is after all, well, WATER, bottled water merchands have to work extra hard to sell their own version of the water in a bottle (brilliant!) concept. for Fred, apparently it means being sold in a bottle that looks like a whiskey flask, but also hanging out at MySpace. Fred currently has 41 friends, not including Tom. After all, I wouldn't want to be Friend with a botle of water, it seems so, ephemeral...

And, at the risk of sounding dated, is this the same Fred that was too sexy for his shirt? (via notcot)

Bob Dylan: Modern Times

7 people recommended this item

Description

A great Bob Dylan record begs to put put on again and again. You never tire of it. Blood On The Tracks. Infidels. Highway 61. Planet Waves. Blonde on Blonde.

Well Bob's new record, Modern Times, has been begging and getting a lot of airplay in our home since it was released earlier this week.

This is not an in your face record, but it's a presence that can't be ignored either. My favorite tunes are the almost eight minute long laid-back Spirit on the Water, the stark ballad, [listen] Workingman's Blues #2, and the Katrina inspired [listen] The Levee's Gonna Break.

The reviews have been outstanding and many are saying that Modern Times is the third in a string of records (Love and Theft and Time Out of Mind) that compares to Dylan's most productive periods. I think that may be true, but right now, we are enjoying Modern Times. And I expect it's going to get a lot of airtime this fall. (via A VC)

Description

He hasn't even started yet, but our new analyst Andrew Parker is proving to be a valuable resource already.

I was reading his blog the other day and came upon this post on Animal Collective.

I went to the Hype Machine and played a few songs. I recall hearing and liking their song Grass (which Andrew blogged about) on last.fm neighbor radio so I went to eMusic and downloaded the entire Feels record.

I've listened to it three or four times this weekend and it's terrific.

Can't wait for Hollinndagain which is coming out in late October. (via A VC)

The Decemberists: The Crane Wife

Description

One of The Gotham Gal's favorite records of 2005 was Picaresque by The Decemberists. We must have listened to that record 100 times!

So we were excited to get a pre-release listen to their new record The Crane Wife which will be out on Oct 3rd, just in time for The Gotham Gal's birthday.

We've only listened a couple times, but we've already fallen in love with this song, called Sons and Daughters, which is the closing track on the record. (via A VC)

TV on the Radio: Return to Cookie Mountain

Description

I first heard this band from Brookyn on The Hype Machine a month ago. The song was Wolf Like Me and I was immediately struck by the pounding drum beats and the distorted guitar that weaves throughout the song. I tagged the song in delicious and went back again and again.

Then I started listening to their other songs and quickly found great tunes like Staring At The Sun and Ambulance.

Then I went to YouTube and watched their live performances at Cochella. I want to see these guys live. Apparently I missed the opportunity at the end of June at Celebrate Brooklyn. It looks like they put on an intense show.

Last week their new record, Return To Cookie Mountain, came out in the UK. I bought it at Amazon and have been listening a bunch. I think Wolf Like Me (the song that got me hooked) is the best song on the record, but there are a number of other good tracks on it as well like Province, Let The Devil In, and Blues From Down Here.

It’s hard to describe TV On The Radio’s music. The best I can come up with is a harder darker Arcade Fire. They use a lot of cool instruments and I particularly like the great horn sounds throughout their music. But the great thing about mp3 blogging is that you can listen to the songs yourself and make up your own mind.

Tom Petty: Highway Companion

Description

My mp3 of the week this week is [listen] Saving Grace, the single off the new Tom Petty record, Highway Companion.

The record isn't out until next week, but I heard Saving Grace last night on KFOG.

After I posted Saving Grace, the folks at Rhapsody alerted me to the fact that Highway Companion is streaming now on Rhapsody. Great stuff. Check it out. (via A VC)

Golden Smog: Another Fine Day

First to recommend

Description

Golden Smog is a "supergroup" like The Travelling Willbury's and CSNY. Golden Smog is Gary Louris and Marc Perlman from The Jayhawks, Jeff Tweedy from Wilco, Dan Murphy from Soul Asylum, and Kraig Johnson.

They've got a new record out called Another Fine Day and they are doing a live show this wednesday night in NYC at The Bowery Ballroom. I saw them (minus Tweedy) at The Bowery Ballroom a couple summers ago and they were great. I am really looking forward to seeing them.

There are a ton of great songs on Another Fine Day but my personal favorite is called Frying Pan Eyes. (via A VC)
