This is a must see movie in which the fantastic performance of Gretchen Mol (The Shape of Things) as Bettie Page, who grew up in a conservative religious family in Tennessee and became a photo model sensation in 1950s New York, should have gotten an Oscar.
An array of talented actors such as David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck) and Lili Taylor (High Fidelity) brings credence to the fascinating film. (via ellenm)

Description
This movie is as good as 'Capote' and it's too bad that these two movies came out so closely together, as we enjoyed them both equally. Toby Jones who portrays 'Truman Capote' is impeccable and Sandra Bullock's Harper Lee is first rate. The story follows the same path as 'Capote' in which Truman Capote plunges into the murder case that inspired his great "nonfiction novel" In Cold Blood, which will lead him into a fevered relationship with one of the two doomed killers, admirably played by Daniel Craig.
A great movie not to be missed.

Description
I am a huge fan of Alfred Hitchcock... and this pop-up book is fantastic. Each opening is dominated by a huge montage of stills and iconic images that rises up, enhanced by acetate windows and glimpses of moving heads or other body parts. Each spread also contains a brief, spoiler-ridden plot summary, sometimes with commentary on how a cinematic effect was achieved, and a side flap that highlights Hitchcock's trademark cameo appearance.

Description
A fascinating book in which John Douglas, the founder and head of the FBI's Investigative Support Unit and the inspiration for the character of Jack Crawford in Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon, describes violent crimes and their consequences.
What stands out in this eye-opening book is how Douglas's compassion for the survivors of violent crimes seems to equal his understanding of the criminals themselves. Serial criminals often exhibit the same symptoms all over the world, which transcend cultures, ethnicity, and geographical make-up. An absolute must-read...

Description
François Truffaut's fascinating 1969 film, based on a real-life, 18th-century behavioral scientist's efforts to turn a feral boy into a civilized specimen, is an fantastically gripping movie.
Truffaut himself plays Dr. Itard, a specialist in the teaching of the deaf. Itard takes in a young lad (Jean-Pierre Cargol) found to have been living like an animal in the woods all his life and names him 'Victor'. Initially branded an "idiot" and uneducable by local townspeople, Victor is helped immensely by Dr. Itard through his humane treatment.
The beautifully shot black and white movie is superb and an absolute must-see.

Description
I have always been amazed at the ingenuity of some of the gadgets used in the spy movies and apparently, I am not the only one. Danny Biederman (one of the writers) has been immersed in the spy world, at least as Hollywood depicts it, from the time of his youth in the 1960s, when he was introduced to a world of "spies, gadgets, adventure, and beautiful women-everything that a ten-year-old boy could possibly want." Since then he has collected over 4,000 props from various sets, amassing such an impressive trove that in 2000 the CIA asked him to exhibit it at its headquarters. This book tells the story of each TV series and movie through Biederman’s props, which range from the coat hook used in U.N.C.L.E. to open a secret passageway, to the gold sofa that adorned James West’s private railroad car in The Wild Wild West.
Amazingly interesting book.

Description
In collaboration with Jim Thompson, Stanley Kubrick delivers the perfect film noir. In 'Killing', Jim Thompson concoct a story about a desperate gang of lowlifes led by a grim and determined Sterling Hayden. Together they devise and execute a complex racetrack robbery, but inner tensions and the iron fist of fate work against them. The cast is uniformly superb, with Hayden, Jay C. Flippen, Timothy Carey, Marie Windsor, and Elisha Cook Jr. fleshing out characters torn between grandiose ambition and petty desire.
This film is the perfect introduction to film noir - the strange narrative structure and Kubrick's bouncing back and forth in time makes this movie an absolute must-see.

Description
I have seen all the movies from this collection and each is absolutely fascinating. 'Fitzcarraldo' and 'Nosferatu, the Vampyre' are brilliant. I would love to see 'Mein Liebster Feind' which is set in the 1950s, when Werner Herzog was 13, he was sharing an apartment with Klaus Kinski, an ego-maniacal live-wire. In an unabated, 48 hour fit of rage, Kinski destroyed every piece of furniture in sight. From this chaos, a beautiful albeit volatile partnership was born. In 1972, Herzog cast Kinski in Aguirre, The Wrath of God. Four more films would follow. In this personal documentary, Herzog traces the often violent up and downs of their relationship, revisiting Munich apartment where they first met - and thrashed, and the various locations of their films.
This collection is an absolute must for any Klaus Kinski and Werner Hertzog. (via nolaicycle)

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM OF THE YEAR
In the cold land of Antarctica, the Emperor Penguins each express their true love with a special heartsong of their own that expresses their very being. However, the misfit Mumble cannot sing, but instead has an extraordinary talent to tap dance with almost magical energy and expression. Nevertheless, the deeply conformist leadership of the colony fearfully blames the young penguin's unorthodox ways for the lean fishing that threatens them all. Defiant in the face of unjust rejection, Mumble and his true friends set out to find the true cause of the famine. Through the motley crew's trials and perils, Mumble learns many things about his frozen world, not the least of which being that his toe tapping talent may be what he needs to save his people.
Entertainment at its best but warning!!... May cause toe-tapping.

ACHIEVEMENT IN CINEMATOGRAPHY
A fabulous movie not to be missed! Director Neil Burger's screen adaptation of Steven Millhauser's short story 'Eisenheim the Illusionist'. Eisenheim (Edward Norton) is a magician in early 1900's Vienna, who falls in love with a woman well above his social standing. Description
This is one of my absolute top favorite movies. This extraordinary film, directed by Jane Campion (The Piano) is based on the life of Janet Frame, an introverted, sensitive girl who was later misdiagnosed as schizophrenic and spent eight years in a psychiatric hospital.
She would later become one of New Zealand's most celebrated poets and novelists, publishing her first books while she was still confined to a mental ward. She had endured over 200 electroshock treatments and had almost been lobotomized by careless physicians who took no time to understand that she was merely awkward and shy and suffered from little more than routine depression.
Fascinating film, visually gorgeous and inbelievable performances. An absolute must-see!!

Description
A starkly original film-going experience based on a true life story, this film from New Zealand director Peter Jackson is a stirring drama that offers up the unexpected.
The story concerns two girls, outcasts who become best friends, whose bizarre fantasy life becomes more intense as their bond becomes increasingly more obsessive. When the mother of one of the girls tries to intervene and split the girls apart, they kill her and stand trial for murder in what is to this day still a celebrated and controversial case. Kate Winslet (Titanic) and Melanie Lynskey create two sympathetic and yet uncomfortably eerie characters in riveting portrayals.

Description
Clever twists and a bona fide surprise ending make this an above-average courtroom thriller, tapping into the post-O.J. scrutiny of our legal system in the case of a hotshot Chicago defense attorney (Richard Gere) whose latest client is an altar boy (Edward Norton) accused of murdering a Catholic archbishop.
The film uses its own manipulation to tell a story about manipulation, and when we finally discover who's been pulling the strings, the payoff is both convincing and pertinent to the ongoing debate over what constitutes truth in the American system of justice.
Making an impressive screen debut that has since led to a stellar career, Norton gives a performance that rides on a razor's edge of schizophrenic pathology--his role is an actor's showcase, and without crossing over the line of credibility, Norton milks it for all it's worth.
This movie is an absolute must-see for Edwad Norton's performance....

Cecilia (Mia Farrow), a depression-era waitress married to a brutish husband (Danny Aiello), finds her only escape at the movies, her current favorite being a light comedy about an explorer among socialites, called The Purple Rose of Cairo. She sees it so many times that the main character, Tom Baxter (Jeff Daniels), falls in love with her and steps off the screen to woo her. When news of this gets back to the movie studio, the producers send the actor who played Baxter (also Daniels) to convince Baxter to get back on the screen. The script is one of Allen's funniest and sadest and is one of my all time favorite.
