This is a must see movie in which the fantastic performance of Gretchen Mol (The Shape of Things) as Bettie Page, who grew up in a conservative religious family in Tennessee and became a photo model sensation in 1950s New York, should have gotten an Oscar.

An array of talented actors such as David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck) and Lili Taylor (High Fidelity) brings credence to the fascinating film. (via ellenm)

Description

Anthony Hopkins (my whole time favorite!!) returns in 'Fracture' in which an assistant DA (Gosling) is caught up in a game of cat-and-mouse with a man (Hopkins) who tried to murder his wife and is set free on a series of technicalities.

Ryan Gosling is one terrific actor and I sure can't wait to see this movie. We just saw the trailer yesterday and it looks fantastic.

Description

This movie is as good as 'Capote' and it's too bad that these two movies came out so closely together, as we enjoyed them both equally. Toby Jones who portrays 'Truman Capote' is impeccable and Sandra Bullock's Harper Lee is first rate. The story follows the same path as 'Capote' in which Truman Capote plunges into the murder case that inspired his great "nonfiction novel" In Cold Blood, which will lead him into a fevered relationship with one of the two doomed killers, admirably played by Daniel Craig.

A great movie not to be missed.

This is a gem of a movie!.. Judith Hearn is a middle aged spinster earning a living by giving piano lessons in the Dublin of the 1950's. She falls in love with a shady hotel owner who, in turn, decides to exploit her as far as he can.

The cast is Bob Hoskins as James Madden,Maggie Smith as Judith Hearne, Wendy Hiller as Aunt D'Arcy, Marie Kean as Mrs. Rice, Alan Devlin as Father Quigley, Rudi Davies as Mary, Prunella Scales as Moira O'Neill, Aine Ni Mhuiri as Edie Marinan, Sheila Reid as Miss Friel, Niall Buggy as Mr. Lenehan and Kate Binchy as Sister Ignatius.

Maggie Smith and Bob Hoskins are superb in this fabulously romantic movie based on misunderstanding. Do not miss.

François Truffaut's fascinating 1969 film, based on a real-life, 18th-century behavioral scientist's efforts to turn a feral boy into a civilized specimen, is an fantastically gripping movie.

Truffaut himself plays Dr. Itard, a specialist in the teaching of the deaf. Itard takes in a young lad (Jean-Pierre Cargol) found to have been living like an animal in the woods all his life and names him 'Victor'. Initially branded an "idiot" and uneducable by local townspeople, Victor is helped immensely by Dr. Itard through his humane treatment.

The beautifully shot black and white movie is superb and an absolute must-see.

This is an fabulously great film with a wonderful performance by John Hurt in the role of Quentin Crisp, a flamboyant English homosexual in the days when being such was anything but comfortable.

Quentin Crisp grew up in an era where homosexuality was not an option as a life style, Still, he managed to make it in a world that was decidedly unfriendly to those like him. Witty and self assured, he lived his life as he wanted, despite the hardships he faced due to his self professed homosexuality.

An absolutely must-see.

I have seen all the movies from this collection and each is absolutely fascinating. 'Fitzcarraldo' and 'Nosferatu, the Vampyre' are brilliant. I would love to see 'Mein Liebster Feind' which is set in the 1950s, when Werner Herzog was 13, he was sharing an apartment with Klaus Kinski, an ego-maniacal live-wire. In an unabated, 48 hour fit of rage, Kinski destroyed every piece of furniture in sight. From this chaos, a beautiful albeit volatile partnership was born. In 1972, Herzog cast Kinski in Aguirre, The Wrath of God. Four more films would follow. In this personal documentary, Herzog traces the often violent up and downs of their relationship, revisiting Munich apartment where they first met - and thrashed, and the various locations of their films.

This collection is an absolute must for any Klaus Kinski and Werner Hertzog. (via nolaicycle)

"Pan's Labyrinth" is the story of a young girl who travels with her pregnant mother to live with her mother's new husband in a rural area up North in Spain, 1944, after Franco's victory. The girl lives in an imaginary world of her own creation and faces the real world with much chagrin. Post-war Fascist repression is at its height in rural Spain and the girl must come to terms with that through a fable of her own.

The special effects and the performances, especially by Sergi Lopez as Captain Vidal, are increbbly fantastic. A bit violent but well worth seeing..
