Clip 'N Go Craft Caddy

Updated Jul 15, 2008

Description

This is something I'd really like to have for beading. As storage systems go, it's unique in that the lidded compartments pop out. When I'm beading, I'd much rather deal with a couple of little boxes than a large container, and it makes clean-up much easier when you can swipe a bunch of beads from the table into your hand and then dump then in the little box. Or, when starting to bead, to be able to dump the contents of one little box onto the beading surface, without having to dig them out of a compartment.

In short, I think the detachable boxes are a great feature.

Prop-It Magnetic Pattern Holder

Updated Oct 11, 2006

Description

Reading a bead pattern is easy--except while you're beading. Trying to keep track of where you are while juggling thread, needle, beads, piece-in-progress and pattern--yikes! This not only frees up your hands by holding the pattern, it also keeps your place using magnets, including a magnetic magnifying glass to help you zero in on the line you're working on. It will help just as much with cross stitch patterns, if that's your thing.

Bead Sweeper

Updated Oct 10, 2006

Description

This product is new to me, but what a great find if it works! The claim is that "This wonderful gadget works perfectly for picking up spilled beads from your couch, upholstered chair or carpet. It works like a hand-held sweeper with the turning brush scooping the beads into the compartment. Just unsnap the back, and pour your beads back into your container" (from NordicNeedle.com).

Berkley® FireLine®

Updated Oct 10, 2006

1st to recommend

Description

This is a great crossover product that beaders have borrowed (stolen!) from those who fish. Fireline is a pre-waxed braided cord consisting of gel-spun polyetholine – which is known as the strongest fiber per diameter ever created.

The fact that it is ultra-thin, strong, flexible and knots easily makes this ideal for many kinds of beadwork--I've even seen it used for bead knitting! It's often explicitly listed in the "supplies" section of printed projects, usually suggesting that you use the 6 lb. test weight. Fireline used to come in mostly ugly colors, but now there is a "crystal" color that is popular in beadwork.

A great resource for inspiration and learning new techniques, as well as for patterns and projects. If I only had time to try all the projects I have flagged. . .

OTT-LITE® TrueColor (TM) Portable 13W Task Lamp

Updated Oct 12, 2006

1st to recommend

Description

This is a great little task lamp that reduces eyestrain when you're doing fine work of any kind. For beading and other crafts, the most important part is that it shows colors as they would appear in daylight. Trying to see what beads go well together is next to impossible under most indoor lighting--you'll think a bead is one color, then later it looks a different color!

This lamp folds open and closed and, when closed, is quite compact. With the handle at the top it is nicely portable, though I wish it had a cordless option like a re-chargeable battery.

Bead Girl Jewelry Folio

Description

My mom got me this for Christmas, and it was one of my favorite presents. I love the embroidered picture on the front! It's very sturdy and well-made, using heavy canvas with snap and zipper closures--I'll be using this one for years. The inside has a number of zippered compartments of different sizes, as well as a detachable zippered pouch. The inner lining is a contasting striped fabric, a nice detail that contributes to the overall great look and feel of this bag. Great design, both functionally and visually.

Watchmaker's Cases - Lee Valley Tools

Updated Nov 16, 2006

Description

This is great for keeping tiny things organized. I use them for my beads and findings. If you buy them at a bead or craft store you'll pay an arm and a leg, but if you buy them from Lee Valley you won't believe how cheap they are.

Thread Heaven

Updated Oct 10, 2006

Description

This thread conditioner is great. It keeps the tiny fibers together, making needle threading easier, and helps keep the thread from tangling up with itself. (I say "helps" because I still end up with my thread looking like it's caught in Charlie Brown's kite-eating tree sometimes!)
