A Separate Reality: A Novel

First to recommend

Description

I've been really excited to have the opportunity to get the word out about New York-based artist Robert Marshall's electric first novel, A Separate Reality (Carroll & Graf, November 2006) -- described by The Washington Post as "remarkably vivid" and "as good an encapsulation of adolescence as you're likely to read."

Marshall's debut has been variously described as "a failure to come of age story," a pitch-perfect literary assessment of '70s pop culture, and "a novel about the risks and appeal of the desire to be perfect; and the influence of an ex-hippie poet who encourages smoking pot, reading poetry and the writing of Carlos Castaneda." All of this and more is true, and this is one new voice on the fiction scene that you won't want to miss.

Soft Skull: Supermodel by David Breskin

First to recommend

Description

"Epic poems need epic heroes—divine, fantastic creatures, whose larger than life exploits project the spirit of an age. Homer’s had Odysseus, Dante’s Beatrice, and now David Breskin has bequeathed our celebrity-obsessed era its very own form-fitting “Supermodel.” Loosely inspired by the story of tsunami survivor Petra Nemcova, the heroine of Supermodel is an outsized force of nature: fiercely competitive, intellectually curious, emotionally wounded, resolutely moral, and of course, ravishingly attractive — a globe-trotting innocent who exudes sexuality in every way...except the most obvious. As she literally clings to life, her story is revealed in a series of flashbacks which wing us from Middle East to Wild West, desert to tropics, country to city — all vividly described, in potent couplets, as paradises found and lost. Breskin peppers this dark comedy with unsettling wordplay, shrewd social commentary, and a reporter’s acute eye for the facts of life: his virtuosic writing matches the breathless pace and rich complexity of his heroine's travails. Even as Breskin relates his supermodel’s tale, his story is matched by strangely salient scrolls of ‘found poetry’ culled from web sites. This new feat of literary dovetailing creates a sublime surprise: the first epic poem of the Internet Age."

The Exquisite, an "East Village Noir" by Laird Hunt (Coffee House Press)

First to recommend

Description

THE EXQUISITE is not so much a mystery as mysterious. One of the things that first attracted me in an electric way when I was reading it in manuscript form was Tulip, an ethereal sort of love interest who is at once central to the story told by narrator Henry and completely elusive:

"Tulip. Sitting close and spinning. For a second she looked a little like a pale yellow pinwheel, like the retinal afterimage of a fizzling golden firework. Only she was wearing gray and had on one of those aviator's hats, which completely covered her blond hair and set her eyes to sparking and crackling, so that what I should have been seeing in the money end of my smiles was something opalescent, azure, electric blue." (p. 12)

What is she all about? Is it ever really clear? Attention David Lynch, Godard, Bowie, Cindy Sherman fans: this strange and inviting book will drive you crazy in the best way.
