Music: The Last Romance, Arab Strap, CD

Description

"It's on the tips of our tongues, but who'll be the first one to say it? I've said it too much in the past so let's just have fun and delay it. But come round and show me..."

Because it just doesn't get any sexier than "Come Round and Love Me."

If you're in New York on April 12, join us for Upstairs at the Square, featuring ex-Arab Strap Aidan Moffat (aka L. Pierre) and his new band, The Best-ofs. More: www.bn.com/upstairs

The Exquisite, an "East Village Noir" by Laird Hunt (Coffee House Press)

First to recommend

Description

THE EXQUISITE is not so much a mystery as mysterious. One of the things that first attracted me in an electric way when I was reading it in manuscript form was Tulip, an ethereal sort of love interest who is at once central to the story told by narrator Henry and completely elusive:

"Tulip. Sitting close and spinning. For a second she looked a little like a pale yellow pinwheel, like the retinal afterimage of a fizzling golden firework. Only she was wearing gray and had on one of those aviator's hats, which completely covered her blond hair and set her eyes to sparking and crackling, so that what I should have been seeing in the money end of my smiles was something opalescent, azure, electric blue." (p. 12)

What is she all about? Is it ever really clear? Attention David Lynch, Godard, Bowie, Cindy Sherman fans: this strange and inviting book will drive you crazy in the best way.

portia wells pen and pencil holder

Description

I already own one of these; not this dear poodle sadly. My pick of a plain cup with a gold rim was kind of boring in retrospect! Portia Wells (www.portiawells.com) is one of my favorite people, and an absolutely brilliant artist who's always exploring the fascinating juncture of creation and consumption. If you take my advice just once, let it be this: a chance to acquire an original work by Wells at under fifty bucks is truly too good to pass up.

KELLEY MCRAE: Never Be

First to recommend

Description

It's freaky really; I've been listening to this cd nonstop since I got it, and since I change my mind every five minutes about everything that's quite a statement. Alt-country, singer-songwriter-y in the best way, gorgeous storytelling and soulful tunes from an iconic voice very much on the rise.
