Game of Life -electronics kit

Description
Life goes on. A mathematician by the name of Conway invented a simple mathematical game of cellular automata. In this game each cell has certain parameters that allow it to grow or die. By placing cells near each other you can create endless patterns of growing and dying cellular communities. Some patterns result in a stable or fixed community of cells that stops changing, other patterns go on and on and on in a mesmerizing way. This kit by adafruit is a simple LED kit that anyone with a soldering iron can make. Though you cannot set the original parameters, when you switch it on the cells or green LED's light and change forming patterns that are fascinating to watch. Make one of these, put it on your desk and think about the basic forces of your life and what makes it go on or come to a complete stop.

Starrett 12 Steel Rule
First to recommend
Description
A steel ruler is a steel ruler right? Not when it is a Starrett. It's a beautifully designed and precision made tool that will last forever. The gradations are cut into the metal so that you can not only see them easily in all lighting conditions (unlike photo-etched ones) but you can very accurately make a mark exactly at the measurement you choose. These tools are made for tool and die makers and machinists who routinely work to accuracies of thousandths of an inch. To these guys and gals 1/64th is rough work. So get the best ruler you can buy and love it every time you use it. They come in all sizes and you can get flexible ones too that are perfect for use on round things.

Starrett 36" Starrett Straight Edge
First to recommend
Description
If you've read my other recommendations, you know I like quality tools that will last a lifetime. A straightedge is nothing more than a piece of straight metal so why spend sixty bucks on one from Starrett? The steel is better which means it has been carefully chosen for it's ability to be ground to a very precise degree of straightness and then hardened so that when you use it with a knife blade, it won't knick. It is polished with a matte finish so glares won't affect your accuracy. Every time you use it you will feel it's quality and this will translate into the work you do whether you are cutting a picture for scrapbooking, cutting a piece of fabric, or drawing a line on a board. These straightedges come in different sizes, choose one that is bigger than you need and you'll thank yourself those few times you need a bigger one!
