George Tsypin Opera Factory [1568985320] - $75.00 : Chronicle Books

Description

I'm addicted to, and in awe of, awesome stage design. You're making an entire world in a space not much larger than the average loft apartment. That takes real creativity and innovation. And it doesn't need to be iPod-friendly.

Description

If you're into futuristic and eco-conscious (aka, green) architecture, I'd rec this over that Lomme bed thing.

In talking to my friend from Tokyo, one of the cultural differences that stuck out was the concept of 'myhome'. This is the idea is that you can one day have a place that is fully your own and that you can run yourself, sort of your ideal livingspace. The American dream has sort of become the Suburban dream, and that's pretty sad. This book made me feel better.

::sucks teeth::

It's really pretty. And I mean *really* pretty. I highly recommend looking at the site; it was worth it for all the future-utopian-gattaca daydreams I got to have for 5 minutes.

But. The site has blatant typos; I just bet that mattress doesn't come in a selection of firmness options; and they're not even listing the price. And if that iPod integration worked as well as iTunes integrated with my PC (it didn't) I would be pleasantly surprised. Let's just say I'm not expecting great things.

If you're heavily into Mork, ok. If you're into sleep, I'll recommend sticking with my tradition: full mattress/red curtains/down comforter/Zen player.

Lucha Workshop

Description

This is adorable, and it will go really well with the boots I just got from target. And that gray jersey dress. This is really not fair--why can't I just have a clothing allowance?

Looking at the pictures further: the inside is red, with more cute printing. The black canvas strap is not ugly canvas, and has a nifty shape to it; wider where it rests on your shoulder. Magnetic clasp, but there's a wallet pocket, so that's where your BART card should go, because the full-size wallet you probably have would fit better in the 10x14 main compartment. If I didn't already have a gorgeous yellow bag, and my Mastercard weren't demanding 30 pieces of silver, this would be mine immediately. (via shesabetty)

Adorable handmade onesies with ruffles on bottom

Updated Apr 16, 2007

Description

Words, words. Well, it'd be nice if they had it in black, or something, because itty babies can be had by gothic parents, too, and black is much easier to keep clean. But whatever--those ruffles were what sold me.

I found a pair of underwear by Lip Service once that had those ruffles. I missed out, and I have regretted it ever since. Don't make my mistake. There was never a tiny pink ruffle that didn't make something better. (via simplylovelygifts)

orange! *and* yellow! Sadly, it looks much more like a gardening boot than a galosh, and that is a pity because there aren't many people in my city that have a garden and do their own gardening, but I have a hard time sweating the details on this one. I'm entranced. Just look at that buckle, and that contrast... ::goes all misty-eyed:: (via Kristine)

Description

I first saw this on the arm of one of my idols at my yearly convention, and determined I *must* have it. And it isn't nearly as expensive as I thought it would be!

The photo resolution's fuzzy, but the cuteness of this bag is better captured IRL anyway. As long as Tokyo is still producing chibis, this bag will be in fashion, and it meets my personal size-requirements: it will easily hold an 8.5x11 notebook, and my cell phone.

The New Artist's Manual [0811851249] - $29.95 : Chronicle Books

Updated Apr 16, 2007

1st to recommend

Description

I'm going to own up to the fact that I'm not a visual artist: I know what I like, but my artist-friend teases me with a comment I made on her self-portrait. Which was, "It looks Greek." But when I do decide to invest in some oil paints and wake up that half of my brain, this book will be a great beginning.

Goes into everything, but not in a scary way. The important bits about choosing a palette and a brush, and etceteras, are right near the top, and there's all kinds of suggestions on how to break the rules thereafter. As well as projects to learn on, if the thought of blowing your materials budget on a total screw-up scares the...paint out of you.

Craft Day!

I was walking down that little alleyway--you know, if you walk from the Metreon to Market Street, between Third and Fourth street, and manage to resist Beard Papa's? I guess the cross-street is Mission, but it's more toward Market than that.

There's a little bitty museum there, and they had this in the window. Certainly justified, as it was the Museum of Craft and Folk Art, and this book is full of artists getting their craft on. I'm a creative person and I like making gifts for people; but I am so not a fan of decorated Kleenex cozies. The ideas in here were much, much better.

I'm a blogger. I've only had one, but I've had that one since before LiveJournal started letting everyone join. I actually had to get the coveted add code from an online friend. So, given my obsession with making my private life public, this appealed to me immensely.

This is the best thing about being thrown together with strangers during an emergency situation, am I right? Getting to find out random and intimate details that you never would have thought to ask about. Only now it's in actual-printed-book form.

Shawn Lovell Metalworks Tree Bed

Updated Apr 13, 2007

Description

I would have a really hard time coming up with the perfect sheet set for this baby, but I already know the set of drawers! [Hint: scroll down.]

Added to the beauty of the original design, it wouldn't be hard to string curtains on this bed, either (I am a great afficionado of makeshift curtains made from sari cloth.) In the end, it comes down to an issue of personal style, and I'd kind of like to see that bird's nest be optional, but given the choice between this and a fussy canopy? Come on.

Deep Water Bath

Updated Apr 13, 2007

26 people recommended this item

Description

Like so many others, I am a lover of the deep, very very warm, long soak. Darn that water displacement--it always seems that the water is all gone out the 'overflow' hole as soon as you're comfortable. It's not like it's even in danger of overflowing, anyway.

So I want one of these, and I think it would make a great friend for Mr. Suicide.

I have seen just one thing in my life as cool as this set of drawers, and it was an entire house that looked like it had stepped straight out of The Hobbit: shingeled walls, bulbous architecture and all. I can't buy a house, and I can't buy this either, but how can you look at it and not want it? At least to be in the entryway. At least to freak out your guests. Tell your mom it's a nouveau Australian collection. (via lissette)

Hoodie Chair

Description

I must first confess about this strange defect I have: after I eat lunch, all my body heat travels directly to my stomach. This is a problem if I'm trying to type, and the best way to prevent this is to wear a hoody--but have you never noticed how many hoodies are sadly, sadly reprehensibly ugly?

And it would match my Zen, too. I must have it, I tell you, and immediately. (via oO)

Toyota Prius

Updated Apr 11, 2007

Description

Alrighty. A friend came to visit me driving this puppy, and it was the strangest, coolest ride I have ever had. First off, you can drive it like a bat out of hell and it still gets that crazy 60mpg or whatever. Yes, I should know that stat, but one of the appeals of having a hybrid is that it almost frees you to be the stereotypical lazy American. Almost.

The strange thing is that when you take your foot off the gas, there is no engine-running sound. It is quiet as a traffic cone. And the magnetic key doesn't even need to be put in the ignition. Like a keycard, you can wear it and just be reasonably close to the dashboard, and off you go. Haven't seen that new bubble-VW yet, but until then, this car has my public-transportation-user-vote. Cody's Books

Description

Neil Gaiman is God. But he has to share it with Paul Park, at least during the winter months. This is a gorgeous, enormous book, like everything Chronicle publishes (and this is a Chronicle day, in case you couldn't tell--those will be periodical, but I promise, worth your time.)

A history, a detailing of the legend and a companion, I think it's best for those folks who (like me, ::sniff::) can't afford The Ultimate Sandman, but have all the graphic novels in paperback and want something different than the myriad more scholarly works about same.

Check elsewhere (bn.com or Chronicle) if Cody's doesn't remember where they've put it--they do that sometimes.

I'm addicted to Hindu gods. I mean, in general, and that's why I love this pretty book. I was Lakshmi for Halloween a couple years ago, and this would have matched my costume perfectly. And I would have paid much more attention in world history: because what fun is Islam without elephants?

Chronicle Books - Excerpts

First off, it's a beautiful book, and cheap for that, with a cream-colored ribbon marker. Even the photography is pretty. Second, it's got brownies and quiche and everything inbetween, including half a dozen delicious-sounding names in foreign languages. Try everything in it, and then wrap it again and give it to someone for Christmas. Better than fruitcake!
