Description
A sci-fi western with the Joss Whedon touch. Like all Joss Whedon series, you'll have to live with the pain of it not being very long lived. These shows are worth watching if you can deal with the fact that there won't be any more.

I am late to the game on this show only having caught the bug within the last year, but I loved every moment. Action-filled, sexy and dramatic. What else can you ask for?

Extras (Uglies Series)
First to recommend
Description
This follow-up book to the Uglies series is a world imagined where only Twitter and blogging matters. Okay, Twitter isn't actually mentioned but the central premise is that only "face rank" matters in an economy driven entirely by feed popularity. Reputation rank is determined real time based on how many people "kick" (retweet) your updates. The better your face rank, the more privileges you get.
Thoroughly entertaining and up to the minute. I suspect that even if you don't normally read science fiction you'll enjoy this book if you blog or are addicted to Twitter.

Uglies Series (Boxed Set): Uglies, Pretties, Specials

Description
Okay, okay, these novels are intended for an audience much younger than me: it can be found in the Young Adult section of the bookstore. I like to find science fiction in this section though because what it usually means is "great concepts, quick read."
This apocalyptic science fiction delivers on both. A cautionary tale on where a various types of science can take us if taken too far (Prozac-style drugs, surgical/genetic enhancements, surveillance) with a good dose of teenage rebellion thrown in. A really fun read.

American Gods

Description
Neil Gaiman is always a good bet for compelling fantasy fiction, but this is one of my favorites. This story imagines the old gods living in North America undercover having to fight the influence of the new gods of technology and the Internet. I love the premise and lost myself in this book easily. Not deep, but fun.

Timex Ironman T5C441 Triathlon 30-Lap Watch
First to recommend
Description
A good, strong, waterproof watch that I use whenever I am swimming or doing serious work around the house. It's nice to be able to do some landscaping and feel comfortable just washing the watch off with the hose and not worry about damaging it.
I make big use of the timers and stopwatch to keep my kids in line (timing their "turns" doing something) and reminding myself of things I need to do.
