My Info

About Me

He remembers being six years old and pushing the furniture around in his small bedroom; a few years later he began to regularly scrutinize the pages of Architectural Digest. He became an attorney, but in 1998, the same year he garnered considerable international attention for several residential designs, he founded Darryl Carter Inc. His success was immediate: Metropolitan Home featured his work on its cover in November 1997, a rare and considerable achievement for an uncredentialed designer. His clientele now includes powerful politicians, financiers and members of the arts community; his name is passed from house to house on Embassy Row.

Carters so-called New Traditionalist aesthetic places fine art and craftsmanship on an equal footing with his beloved unrestored antiques and unpredictable flea market finds. He has several Washington, D.C. warehouses full of everything, he says, not small things: I am most attracted to big forms, big shape. He favors classical proportions and a muted palette of gesso hues to best flatter the individualizing personal objects of a house. His current home, the former Chancery of Oman, was largely furnished with salvage yard finds. My favorite design era is right now. I love that everything can be in fashion at the same time. Such openness allows for real self-expression.
