Spin, by Robert Charles Wilson
2 people recommended this item
Description
If you're a scifi fan, it's hard to go wrong with Hugo award winners. The book "Spin" contains some great hard scifi concepts plus some reasonably good character development.

Paradux

Description
The rules of Paradux are simple: Try to get four of your color in a row and always move adjacent balls of opposite colors in parallel. The tactics and strategies may not be quite as simple, though. In a couple days of playing my family tends to have very short games where one person wins quickly because the other person didn't see a move coming, and occasional games that drag on because both players are focusing on defense. I'm not sure about the longevity of the game, but it's fun for now and the wood game set is attractive.

Quoridor

Description
Deceptively simple at first, the deeper Quoridor strategies unfold through experience and competitive play. A game which you thought you had won can suddenly change course in a dramatic fashion. We had originally purchased the kids version of the game which is slightly smaller, but I would recommend this higher quality wood set.

Rat-A-Tat-Cat

Description
I was sure I would be playing Rat-A-Tat-Cat just to entertain my 6-year old given the childish name and drawing style. I was surprised to discover that she likes the game "a little" and I keep asking to play it again. Yes, it's simple and a game can last mere minutes, but the combination of memory, bluffing, and randomness adds up to a fun time.

Carcassonne

Description
ThisNext members recommended Carcassonne and the service suggested it to me based on the other games I and my kids have played. Sure 'nuff, it turned out to be a fun and challenging strategy game that the whole family enjoys. I am consistently impressed by the wide variety of German-style games available. Carcassonne uses similar playing pieces to other games (tiles and "meeple") but the way they are used is completely different from other tile games, making it fun to learn and play. Carcassonne a bit easier (and faster) than Settlers of Catan and about the same level as Ticket to Ride; I think it's going to be more popular with our family than either.

This heat shield doesn't make my Dell laptop run any cooler, but it does an excellent job of protecting my legs from being scorched. Plus it's way thinner than the (popular) Belkin CushTop and can even squeeze into my laptop carrying case.

Description
Every kid (and dad) needs a set of 30 magnetized golden ratio rhombic pyramids. It would be nice to get these in wood instead of plastic, but they're still fun for the imagination.

Description
The Belkin Pivot with 12 outlets eases the pain when you have a few computers, monitors, printers, scanner, speakers, chargers which all need power. Wait, get a UPS for the computers, but the rest can plug into one or two of these.

NETGEAR FVS124G Gigabit LAN Dual-WAN VPN Firewall Router
First to recommend
Description
UPDATE: The feature for routing certain protocols to a specific WAN occasionally does not work on this router. NETGEAR support recommended I spend $240 more to upgrade to a higher end NETGEAR model which "has fewer problems" (their words).
OLD REVIEW: This dual-WAN router allows me to use a DSL and a cable Internet connection concurrently on my home network with load balancing, failover, and various custom routing rules. The QoS settings allow me to control what services get priority when the network traffic is high. And, it's Gigabit on the LAN.

UltraFire C3 Cree Flashlight

Description
This is a powerful little pocket flashlight which uses a single AA battery. If you haven't tested the latest generation of LED torches, you have no idea how bright these things are getting. This one is an especially great introduction given how cheap it is. I paid $13 with free shipping from dealextreme.com and it is almost as bright as my $60 Fenix pocket LED flashlight.
