HTC EVO 4G

Description

After waffling between iPhone, Android phones, and the Palm Pre, I finally decided on the HTC EVO 4G from Sprint and without even seeing it. The specs alone on this Android phone sold me, so I pre-ordered it.

UPDATE: Love the device. Too many amazing attributes to list.

WOWee One

First to recommend

Description

The WOWee One was demonstrated at LA StartupWeekend and was an instant audience hit. This portable bass speaker plugs in to your iPod, MP3 player, or cell phone and turns a desk or wall into a an amplified speaker with extra bass. Great for music and can also be used for conference calls so that everybody in the room can hear the line.

Medeco Single Cylinder High Security Patriot Maxum Deadbolt

First to recommend

Description

After watching Brian Brushwood demo bump keys on Scam School [1], I decided to install more expensive deadbolts. Medeco was recommended, so I'm giving these a try.

Update: This is a fantastic lock. You can feel the quality every time you come home. It can be difficult to find a lockshop that can copy the unique keys. Make sure you order the correct size for the holes in your door. The online store I purchased this from was super nice and sent me a free replacement part of the right size.

Apple iPad

38 people recommended this item

Description

I spent the weekend playing with a new Apple iPad and plan to keep it. It's become the tool I use to read email and browse the web while lounging around the house. However, even if I had a 3G model, I probably would not bother lugging it around away from home.

Pro:

- Browsing the web is fantastic.

- Reading email is a great experience and typing short responses is fine.

- It's an amazing Kindle.

- Watching movies and TV shows is good as long as you only have 1-2 people who need to see the screen.

- Battery lasts forever. I'll probably plug it in overnight, but won't have to worry about using it too much during the day.

Con:

- I had to borrow somebody else's Windows computer before I could even start using the iPad. You have to install iTunes on a Win/Mac computer and connect the iPad before you can do anything with it. An iPad by itself is useless and there is no support for iTunes on Ubuntu.

- Typing on the keyboard is possible, but it's nowhere as easy as on a real keyboard or even the keyboard on my Treo phone. The large keyboard in landscape mode is too small for touch typing. The small keyboard in portrait mode is too large for fast thumb typing.

- There is only a single login account on the iPad. I can't let other people use it without giving them access to all my content and all my automatically logged in web accounts and ssh access to my servers. A cell phone is a personal device and a single account makes sense. A desktop is often shared and always supports multiple accounts. An iPad is in between, and the ability to have multiple user accounts would make me feel much better about sharing it with family and friends.

- I can lock the iPad, but it is only protected by a four digit code. I had to turn on the feature that wipes the entire system if somebody tries 10 bad codes in a row.

Freedom (TM) by Daniel Suarez

First to recommend

Description

"Freedom(TM)" is a well-written sequel to Daniel Suarez' "Daemon" novel. Both books are action packed, high tech, near-future scifi with the most notable and exciting feature being the accuracy in Suarez' descriptions of computer technology and the application of online gaming concepts brought into the physical world. Must-read (or audible.com listening) for techies and gamers.

Rubik's 360

2 people recommended this item

Description

As far as I'm concerned solving Rubik's 360 is impossible. I spent a good half hour experimenting with this puzzle and pretty much proved to myself that there was no way that even one of the balls could be gotten past one of the sphere's, much less both sphere's, much less in to one of the outer holes, much less into the outer hole of the correct color, much less accomplish this for all of the different balls.

Oh, did I mention that my 12 year old son solved the Rubik's 360 when I wasn't looking?

Spin, by Robert Charles Wilson

Description

If you're a scifi fan, it's hard to go wrong with Hugo award winners. The book "Spin" contains some great hard scifi concepts plus some reasonably good character development.

Paradux

First to recommend

Description

The rules of Paradux are simple: Try to get four of your color in a row and always move adjacent balls of opposite colors in parallel. The tactics and strategies may not be quite as simple, though. In a couple days of playing my family tends to have very short games where one person wins quickly because the other person didn't see a move coming, and occasional games that drag on because both players are focusing on defense. I'm not sure about the longevity of the game, but it's fun for now and the wood game set is attractive.

Quoridor

First to recommend

Description

Deceptively simple at first, the deeper Quoridor strategies unfold through experience and competitive play. A game which you thought you had won can suddenly change course in a dramatic fashion. We had originally purchased the kids version of the game which is slightly smaller, but I would recommend this higher quality wood set.

If you mug me, here are some things you might get to take home.

Stuff to put on your desk at work to stimulate your mind and entertain co-workers. They also make interesting gifts for family...

These games will not only be fun for the young folks you give them to, but you will enjoy playing them, too.

Movies you would not put on your favorite movies list but which are on mine
