Description
Toys is another of one of those movies that I can watch repeatedly but which I have a hard time finding anybody else who liked it at all. I find toys beautifully uplifting and briefly disturbing and the visuals and music are so (over the top) pure I can't help smiling. Most of the movie would be wonderful for young kids, but there are a couple scenes to give them nightmares so I don't recommend it. Don't expect a deep movie, but do watch it on a large screen TV.

There's just something about the simple, slow pace of this movie that draws me in. I must have seen it a dozen times or more. For some reason I can't explain, the performance of "End of My Journey" in the middle of the movie moves me so much I get tears in my eyes every time.

Description
Are they really coming out with better movies lately or are my standards just slipping? Babel drew me in completely, not letting go until the final scene. It did an excellent job of not letting me feel lost, and at the same time kept me wondering how events were related and sitting on the edge of my seat wanting to know what was going to happen next. Like several of the movies I have loved recently, Babel portrays realistic human experience without a standard Hollywood plot line. Another one of the best movies of the year and we are only at the end of January.

The Children of Men should compete with The Departed for best film of 2006. Incredibly well directed, shot, produced, acted, and on and on. Very human, very real.

First Syriana and now The Good Shepherd. I feel there is a trend in well-made movies that are trying to make me feel historically uneducated. Though I probably missed half of what was really going on in this movie, I can still recommend it as one where you will enjoy how each scene is put together (even if I had a lot of trouble putting the scenes together into a storyline). Another movie I'll have to watch again. It's a plot, I tell you.

Description
Stargate SG-1 is one of those incredbly successful phenomenons in a subset of the population where the rest of the population has absolutely no idea it's going on. Well written, well directed, well acted, and pretty good effects that get better with the seasons as the budget grows. If you start watching this on DVD and find you like Stargate SG-1, you will have years of enjoyable shows ahead of you. There are that many episodes: http://sg1-episodes.notlong.com

Yeah, it's another cop show. But this one has excellent action, drama, and at times goes over the top with some scenes that are somewhat shocking. I would say that the characters have multi-dimensional aspects but that sounds dry and boring which The Shield is anything but.

I enjoyed the newness of the first season of Six Feet Under; the show went in directions I had not seen before. Then I got bored in the next season. Then I heard that it got better again in some later season, but there were too many other good shows at the time for me to go back.

A very believable representation of how people might respond to something as simple and scary as losing electricity (and radio, and TV, and ...). One of my favorite studies of civilization falling apart.

The scene in this movie where people watch from rural Kansas as nuclear missiles blast off toward the Sovient Union gave me chills. I remembered this scene when I looked out my office window last month and saw a similar smoke trail blasting out over the ocean. I had a scary five minutes while I searched on Google and found that it was a scheduled rocket launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base.

There are so many things wrong with this movie I don't know where to start. I almost fell out of my chair from writhing in science-fact anguish when the group of teens were outrunning deadly cold that was freezing everything in their wake but they were rescued by slamming the door behind them. But, if you have to watch end of the world movies, this is one of them, and that's about all it has going for it.

Description
This is my favorite period piece for whatever era this takes place in. Ok, perhaps it's the only one I've ever even bothered to take the time to see, but Age of Innocence has ended up as one of my favorite movies. I think what draws me the most is the incredible visuals, the depth of colors, and the richness of details. My favorite scene is when the camera pans over the long dining table set with an incredible array of dinnerware and food. I can't put my finger on why, but it moves me. I think I'm drawn to long, slow movies where not much happens.

This movie is long, but I enjoyed every minute of it and didn't want it to end. Though I usually have a hard time following complex people plots, this movie kept me right there. I don't think I've enjoyed a movie this much since The Matrix (which it's nothing like, of course).

At this point, you already know that you have to watch anything that Anthony Hopkins is in. I don't know how he can play so many different characters in so many different movies so well while not really changing the character from movie to movie, but it works for me.
This movie is a meandering, mostly heartwarming tale based on the real-life adventures of a New Zealand tinkerer. I hadn't read any of the history behind the story so it was fairly suspenseful.

I love movies that are different and this one is not like anything I'd seen before. The music was fantastic (bought the CD). I'd put this on my favorite movies list, but it probably isn't quite "unusual" enough given how many people watched and liked it. (via johnpolinsky)

Description
The best thing about this movie is the unusual way in which the story is told. It tells the same overall story a number of times from the perspective of a different character each time. Each run through you get more details and new information that changes the way you view what is really going on. Each segment also starts back a little further in time so it's a bit remeniscent of Mememto, though not quite as confusing.
It's interesting to note that by the time you finish the movie the original cause(s) are finally resolved, even though what is going to happen next in the lives of the characters is about as unresolved as it can get.
I would classify this as a mystery just because of the story telling method.
