Historic Charleston Foundation

Updated Apr 12, 2006

1st to recommend

Description

Getting oriented in Charleston is as easy as falling into a post-prandial nap. Much of the historic area is south of Broad Street; the main commercial artery is King Street, originally an old Indian path named for King George I. Start your exploration where the two streets intersect, at the Historic Charleston Foundation Shop. The Foundation, in collaboration with such manufacturers as Baker Furniture and Mottahedeh, faithfully reproduces antiques from private houses as well as from its own collections. The selection includes cast-metal shutter dogs (decorative hardware that holds shutters and comes in the shape of shells, anchors, butterflies and other forms), English Regency chairs, and Chinese export porcelain in the Blue Willow and Sacred Bird and Butterfly patterns. The Foundation also produces a paint palette, Colors of Historic Charleston, so you can do your own exporting and introduce a bit of Charleston back home. (via Elements of Living)

Description

In the Ballard district of Seattle is Lucca Great Finds, where vintage and beaded chandeliers seem to cover every square inch of the ceiling. In addition to scented French candles and toiletries from Santa Maria Novella, the 800-year-old pharmacy in Florence, Francine Katz and Peter Riches’s quaint shop is stocked with racks and racks of enchanting papers and reams of colorful ribbons. You can’t leave this place without buying something. (via Elements of Living)

Tableau

Updated Apr 11, 2006

Description

Seattle-based Tableau shows owner Karen Olsen’s love of all things fashionable and her flair for mixing mediums—pairing Asian-inspired paper lanterns with hand-painted Provençal furniture, for example. The eclectic shop also carries mismatched tableware, embossed stationery and, my personal favorite, five-inch-tall letters decorated with shimmering glass chips, just like pixie dust. Description

Organic forms come naturally to the award-winning planters, urns and other vessels in the Architectural Pottery collection from Vessel USA. Owner Mike Stephenson, a ceramist, says he’s always been a design addict and a collector of post-war modern design. "When I started the company in the early 1990s, sculptural ceramic containers were not readily available," he says. "So I saw an opportunity to start a business in a medium I love." The collection, which is offered in custom finishes, is sold through selected showrooms and design galleries, the firm’s website and its catalog. (via Elements of Living)

Their Automatic contemporary furniture division features their award-winning stainless steel sling chair and ottoman, which are complemented by other stainless steel pieces—benches, club chairs, lamps, folding screens and even a dog kennel. 555 also manufactures pieces for other designers. Big Red Sun

Updated Apr 6, 2006

Description

Big Red Sun nursery has become an addiction in Austin, Texas. Here, Selena Souders and her partner, Dylan Robertson, have created a verdant oasis of graceful palms, towering trees, indoor tropicals, herbs, garden shrubs, succulents and other botanical beauties. There’s also a shop selling antique and new home décor pieces, including Big Red Sun’s own line of stained concrete and phosphorus-coated steel planters and vases. Another Big Red Sun opened over a year ago in Venice, California. Selena, who honed her skills at the New York Botanical Garden, is a Lucinda Williams fan; the nursery’s name came from a Williams song. (via Elements of Living)

Lunaform

Updated Apr 6, 2006

Description

Lunaform owners Phid Lawless and Dan Farrenkopf figure that problems exist to be solved. Winter-cracked garden urns and planters were their particular pet peeve, so they invented a winter-proofing process using steel-reinforced concrete, turning it on a wheel in traditional pottery fashion. Crafting a single vessel takes three weeks (or more depending upon demand), but landscape architects and home gardeners are grateful. Lunaform’s handcrafted vessels in classic as well as contemporary designs are beautiful features in famous public and private gardens throughout the country. (via Elements of Living)
