Supreme Edition Darth Vader Costume
First to recommend
Description
OK- I admit it, being a Jedi would be bad ass. But they look like dorks wandering around in their robes and tunics that look like pajamas. Darth Vader always looked the most ready to do battle (and, as we discovered, was not such a bad guy in the end). Anyway, this Darth Vader costume is pretty over the top, costing nearly $900. Lots of fun to sport to a halloween party if you have the cash and if you don't mind having your head encased in a full helmet all night long while trying to talk to people. And, of course, you need to get a really good lightsaber to go w/the costume

Head Microgel Prestige Racquets
First to recommend
Description
I LOVE my Head Prestige. I am not sure what the micogel does- probably some sort of shock absorption. Regardless, the Head Prestige has a good weight to it (I am pretty strong and have a tendency to swat at the ball (bad, I know) so the extra weight at the end of the head helps me make my stroke more even and have better follow-thru.)
The racquet's head is not too big but the sweet spot is pretty large relative to the face size. So it is high-performance w/out being to cranky about absolute precision. Plus it has a cool looking red/black/white color schem that I like

The First 30 Days: Your Guide to Any Change (and Loving Your Life More) by Ariane De Bonvoisin
First to recommend
Description
Ariane is a good personal friend of mine and she is one super-smart and connected (in the sense of being grounded in life, as well as in the massive rolodex sense) person. First 30 days is her landmark book that is a guide ot change in one's life. In First 30 days, she has charted out the general shape of change: what it means psychologically, sociologically, and (when relevant) from a physiological and/or financial standpoint as well. Then she applies that templatized insight into various changes one might make in life: getting married, new job, death, etc. Awesome, awesome, awesome!
If you are looking for a little help in orienting yourself as we all stumble thru life, I highly recommend Ariane's work. She will definitely help you add depth to your experience of life which is really the point of our being here, after all ;-)

Shure SE530 Sound Isolating Earphones
3 people recommended this item
Description
Shure is the Cadillac of headphones (or earphones, in their parlance). The SE530's are VERY pricey ($500) but also sound amazing! Great response and super clear imaging. I listen to a lot of ambient and electronica which is often very dependent on the quality of the sooundscape produced by the speakers. While no headphones can give you that body-rumbling sub-woofer feel, the Shures do an incredible job of making you hear those bass notes.
My one complaint about Shures is the cords are very thick and have a connector section (to allow you to plug into longer cords). between the weight of the cord and the heavy connector, they are not good for doing sports unless you are wearing a skin-tight shirt which holds the cord/connector pressed against your body so they wont bounce out

Shure headphones totally rock. They are expensive but worth the money. Huge dynamic range, stay in while you do sports and are comfy enough for long stretches at work or on a plane

The Manticore by Robertson Davies
First to recommend
Description
Robertson Davies is an amazing writer who has a keen insight into how our minds actually work. The Manticore is his superb exploration of a man essentially having a psychotic break during the course of his Jungian analysis. Rich in humor, archetypes/myths, and the sort of "truths" that are not so much provable as feel-able, the Manticore totally opened my eyes to the epic inner journey we all have available to us, should we choose to walk down those dark paths of the psyche. Sort of like a more readable and more fast-paced version of many of the insights that Joseph Campbell writes about in the Hero's Journey. HIGHLY recommended both for the super-high-quality of the writing as well as enduring lessons it teaches.

Pearl Restraints by Kiki De Montparnasse

Description
These restraints from Kiki de Montparnasse are brilliant: 10 feet of real (but not super-high-quality) pearls strung on parachute cord w/metal rings on the ends so you can make adjustable loops to go around wrists et al. Nothing like the feel of pearls on the skin after all. And the parachute cord is strong enough it would take some serious effort to break (that stuff is way strong).
Totally innovative, totally classy, totally sexy. Reserved for the most special occasions ;-)

Ego Waterproof Mp3 Stereo

Description
An absolute summer/pool party essential: floating around your pool w/your ipod floating next to you. The Atlantic Ego floating ipod speaking system is totally up to the task- it looks super-cool in its quasi-industrial look and it sounds pretty good too (not really fair to compare it to high-end regular/non-floating speakers but sounds a lot better than you might guess.)
Highly recommended- I love how ipods can really go anywhere these days

Involver by DJ Sasha
First to recommend
Description
Involver by DJ Sasha absolutely rocks. It is one continuous mix broken up into very danceable, very compelling tracks that are both musically interesting and really make your body feel like moving. The first track, grandnational, is totally amazing- slow, pulsing and building. It is a bit dark at times but ultimately hopeful, I think. The remix of Spooky's "Belong" is phenomenal- totally speaks to me and has been a touchstone for me since I first heard it. Amazing rhythyms, orchestral-like arrangements and movements w/in the piece, and ethereal and uplifting vocals that hover on the edge of being understood. Brilliant- without doubt, Belong is one of my all-time fav tracks.
