Description
I recently learned that Carly Simon has always struggled with stage fright. It just amazes me that someone as stunningly beautiful with an even more stunningly beautiful voice could ever be afraid of performing on stage. But she is human after all. It's easy to forget that when you see the incredibly long list of songs that she has sung . . . and that have found their way into movies, commercials and other aspects of popular culture. Thank you, Carly, for daring to perform for us all.

Description
When I look at the list of songs on this "best of" album, I am blown away by how much "Blondie" I really listened to as I was growing up. Of course, I worshiped Debbie Harry and desperately wanted to be as blond as she was. But the band itself really cranked out an incredible stream of hits. I danced to every one of them.

During a certain period in my life, every party I attended played "That's What I Like About You" at least once during the course of the evening. And I was one of those maniacs dancing up a storm and shouting "Hey !" So, whatever you want to say about the pink suits these guys are wearing, their music rocks my world.

Dark and brooding, "Superunknown" reminds me that I am not the only one who struggles to understand this thing we call life. "Black Hole Sun" may be the most widely recognized song from this particular album, but I love the lyrics and mood of "The Day I Tried to Live."

Description
Some say the "Stone Temple Pilots" have been more followers than leaders as far as their musical output is concerned. But thanks to music television, we get to see a side of musicians we wouldn't otherwise be exposed to and perhaps their own interpretation of what their music means to them. So, when I saw the video for "Interstate Love Song" I became a big fan of STP . . . and they are unique and talented in my amateur estimation.

Description
I bought a collection of Harry Belafonte's songs just before my son was born and started singing the "Banana Boat Song" to him. After he was born, I continued to sing (with Harry's help) and rock him with the calypso beat. Somehow it worked. And then I found one of my own childhood favorites, a song my mother used to sing to me: "Scarlet Ribbons". Guess their was an unconscious recognition on my part of the family tradition my mother had already started.

Even if you have not had the chance to catch the movie, you should try the soundtrack. It's a star-studded compilation of little-known songs by well-known artists . . . and great road tripping music.

Description
Thankfully for us, KT Tunstall did not rest on the laurels of her success with "Suddenly I See" and went on to create "Drastic Fantastic". I am a little confused as to why she is consider a "pop" artist but the music is sweet however you choose to slice it. This particular album includes a digital booklet for even more KT fun.

This is a fun single, with two versions of the song that became the anthem of "The Devil Wears Prada". "Suddenly I See" is such a great song that I believe two versions are more than twice as better than one.

I got turned on to to Brandi Carlile via "Grey's Anatomy 3" and decided to take a chance on the whole album. Her voice is rough, but true. And the songs are a perfect match for her. Now that I have listened to it more than a dozen times, I have some new favorites to add to my hulapod.

40 songs, yet that is really just the tip of the Genesis iceberg. So many of the songs I love are here, however, that I believe this is a solid representation of the band and its history. I will never get enough of "Follow You Follow Me" and "Abacab" still rocks my socks off. I am sure you, too, will discover some jewels amongst this mix.

It is hard to know where Fleetwood Mac ends and Stevie Nicks begins. The two are so tangled together in a long and stormy history. But they have managed to create some amazing music nonetheless. "Gypsy" is a huge favorite of mine . . . and I love this longer, more vocally interesting version. And Stevie Nicks has always struck me as the epitome of the modern day gypsy.

Description
Guess I listen to more country music than I realize. I actually saw Lucinda Williams live in concert (in a very small suburban theater) and never knew she was a country singer. Perhaps not owning a single one of her albums made me more open to listening . . . I loved her music, her voice and her band playing the songs from this album and several previous recordings. And I danced in the aisles too.

I have so many memories wrapped around "Every Time You Go Away" that I hardly listened to anything else that Paul Young produced. But, time has given me a little perspective, and I am now thrilled to discover that he has re-recorded his own hit along with thirteen other love songs. His voice gives each of them new life . . . this is a great album for hopeful romantics.

Fortunately for me, a good friend of mine had a decent CD player and a boyfriend with an even better CD player. Otherwise, I would have missed this album completely, stuck as I was in my tangled mess of melting cassette tapes and iffy sound quality. Sting sings back-up on "Money for Nothing", which is a hoot when you really listen to what the lyrics are telling you. But the album is no one-hit wonder; it is smooth and soulful from start to finish.

Description
It's hard to believe how many eras and genres Joe Jackson covers in the course of a single album. He rocks, jives, shimmies, grooves and fox trots his way through a series of hip, happening songs. He starts off strong with "Is She Really Going Out With Him" and finishes with a wish to be "Nineteen Forever". Just a really fun album.
