I was born in Medellin, Colombia in 1978. Growing up in Medellin, my interest in the arts and sculpture led me to study under several art academies, independent local artists and architects. I received a bachelors of Science in Industrial Design in 2001 from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia.
Following graduation I founded MIO, a design laboratory dedicated to exploring opportunities in the field of sustainable design. I exhibited my first collection at the 2003 International Contemporary Furniture Fair. Since then products from the MIO Collection have been showcased by Material ConneXion, Felissimo Design House, The Ontario Science Center, The National Building Museum in Washington and The Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh among others. My work has been widely published by periodicals including: Metropolis, I.D. Magazine, Interior Design, The New York Times, Newsweek, Contract Magazine and Azure. My designs have also been included in the books: Becoming a Product Designer by Bruce Hannah, The EcoDesign Handbook and The International Design Year Book 2005, edited by Marcel Wanders.
I was presented with the People’s Choice Award in 2002 for the Need International Design Competition sponsored by Core 77, for my collaboration in Fibrid. In 2005 my designs for MIO were recognized with the Best Collection Award at the New York International Gift Fair. My work is part of the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum’s permanent collection.
