Piacenza Cashmere/Suede driving gloves

Updated Feb 12, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

From Piacenza, makers of fine Italian cashmere since 1733. These 'Guanti Guida' (or driving gloves) work equally well for simpler tasks and on men as well as women. Made out of a thin, but very warm, layer of cashmere, the glove is supremely soft, warm and tactile. Best of all is the neatly stitched piece of suede leather on the palm - perfect for everyday use and to prevent the cashmere weave from unfurling. Lastly, has a discrete yet elegant red Piacneza logo on the side.

It's difficult to find online, but you can email them and they will gladly give you a list of distributors in your area.

IWC Mark XVI

Updated Jan 10, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

Ah, the IWC Mark XVI. While the watch itself has a storied history (the XVI are roman numerals) I'm just attracted to the look - and the fact that, if I actually saved up awhile, I could afford it ($3700).

I like the silver on silver contrast, and the Guilloché dial. The white hands and numerals are particularly striking.

Like most watch companies, IWC has been increasing the diameters of their watches. The Mark XVI clocks (ha! actually, that wasn't too good) in at 39mm. This is tiny compared to the dinner-plate size watches that are the norm. While those have a place, my skinny wrists and quite elegance ( I like to think :D ) demand something a bit more toned down. The XVI straddles the line between sporty-casual and dress-casual; it's quite versatile.

Watch geeks, inside you'll find an ETA 2892, fine tuned and with parts replaced by IWC. Stainless steel case and band, water resistant to 60 meters and it even has an iron inner case for magnetic field protection.

Check out the second picture for a more real -life view. Anyone care to buy this for me?

Aspinal Men's leather gloves

Updated Jan 14, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

A proper gentleman needs a proper pair of leather gloves. Aspinal of London, one of those established English firms, makes right-ho leather products of the finest distinction.

The classic pattern for dress gloves is with ruffled edges as shown here, and with the interior lined in silk. However, I would choose Cashmere (sorry tradition) for the superior warmth.

Whatever you choose, they're bound to look classically stylish. You can apply a little leather waterproofing treatment to make them winter ready, but your valet should do the snow clearing now, shouldn't he?

The traditional casual men's leather glove is without ruffled edges and with a few leather stripes going down the middle. They look pretty similar.

Why I know these things, the good lord only knows.

If you'd like a pair of gloves like these but aren't particularly fond of the Dollar to Pound Sterling rate, you can get very good gloves that are almost identical here:

Sinn 6000 Frankfurt Chronograph

Updated Dec 4, 2007

1st to recommend

Description

Sinn of Germany is a highly respected watch brand, but their prices are certainly more in line than their Swiss colleague's offerings.

The Frankfurt Am Main collection is made for the man on the go and with money on his mind. With a total of 4 time zones, the wearer can easily discern when Abu Dabhi's market just opened. Also has an included chronograph in case he feels like timing those short rallies on the Dow Jones and stuff.

Classic black dial, stainless steel bracelet and 38.5 mm case diameter. He'll keep his clients guessing as to what brand he is wearing; tell them he had it custom made :)

Braun Büffel Men's Wallets

Updated Nov 21, 2007

1st to recommend

Description

Braun Büffel of Germany are makers of high quality and super functional wallets. Every wallet is tastefully designed and you can see that thought went into the features. They also sport nice little touches like a silver placard Bull on the front and fabric lined interiors with the company name.

I have a small wallet from them that almost qualifies for front-pocket status. It has an ID window and 4 card slots, a coin pouch, 2 billfold compartments and room for a couple of card under the regular card slots. It carries everything I need and is quite classy. Perfect for a wallet traditionalist.

For some reason, they aren't officially sold in the USA. They are easy to get in Europe, and you can find quite a selection online as well - though you may have to have it shipped from overseas.

JCrew Large Vachetta Magic Wallet

Updated Nov 13, 2007

1st to recommend

2 people recommended this item

Description

Knowing my perpetual quest to find a slimmer, front pocket wallet, my sister bought this for me a little while ago. It's made out of a fine Vachetta leather. It has 4 card slots on the outside, and elastic bands on each interior side - one in an 'X' shape, and the other running in 2 parallel lines.

They call it a magic wallet because it can open both ways - like a book opening at both sides. A cool trick is to put some (folded) money on one side, close the wallet and fold it over - the money will now be stored securely by the elastic bands. Neat.

They are perfectly useful to carry just what you need. Can accommodate a bit of cards without getting too bulky. It is also available in a women's version in some funky colors.

Jacques Etoile Lunamatic Silver Dial

Updated Nov 21, 2007

1st to recommend

Description

I just love the design of this watch. It's dressy but has some playfulness to it. It's not a modern design at all, but you don't need modern for EVERYTHING....

It's made by Jacques Etoile, a German watchmaking brand that is relatively young. Naturally, it's an automatic.

What I like about the dial are the brushed silver circles, the 2 moons rotating in their displays (the top shows how the moon appears in the Northern hemisphere, the bottom, the Southern) and the analog date counter (the bottom dial), a very unusual feature.

I think it's quite classy and pretty at the same time. Not to pricey considering what the Swiss brands cost.

Silver Plated Collar Stays

Updated Nov 1, 2007

1st to recommend

Description

I got this as a gift, and it actually came quite nicely wrapped and in a nice little box with a ribbon (from the seller, not the gift-giver.)

Every man needs collar stays for dress shirts (which, if they are good ones, should take them.) If you don't use stays, you could end up with an upturned collar tip (the horror!) These are quite nice looking, sturdy, and come in assorted sizes in the box.

Seem to be available only by this seller on eBay, but they seem quite reputable.
