About a Boy by Nick Hornby
First to recommend
Description
Hilarious book about a hip, peter-pan type bachelor, Will Freeman, who decides a great way to bed women is by pretending to be a single parent. But the 12 year old son of one of his conquests turns Will's carefree world upside down when hel finds himself mentoring the boy.
A laugh out loud kind of book

Bosch Tankless Water Heater

Description
The French have been using tankless water heaters for, like, ever, and as usual Americans are way behind the curve on this stuff. Bosch is a fantastic brand, and this one is only $999. And here's what's really cool -- you get to deduct 1/3 of the cost of purchase and installation from your taxes. So get to it, Greenies. Ditch that big water heater tank.

ZIMKIDS: Feed Zimbabwean Orphans, Body and Soul - GlobalGiving
First to recommend
Description
ZimKids is all that stands between 160 orphans and starvation. Food baskets from Botswana are delivered to the orphans and their caretaker families each month. The donations are generated primarily through the USA sales of hand made dolls created by the children. With more donations, more children can be brought into the program.
While the emphasis is on the living, there was also the sad story of a child who died of AIDS-- the sale of his dolls paid for his funeral.
This is a fantastic organization - I've been aware of it for several years.
Now they are listed on globalgiving.com and need to raise $4000 from 50 donors. Won't you donate $10 or more today? You could change a life.

What a Way to Go: Life at the End of Empire

Description
In spite of the serious subject of this doc, I found myself laughing out loud at the hilarious old film clips the director chose to illustrate his ideas. Some of his words are so inspiring, I wrote them down:
"Will we be lovingly remembered in the songs of our descendants as they recount the story of this lost and very wounded tribe that stepped back from the abyss and found its way home to the community of living souls?"

This is the most brilliant book I've read in a long time. If you're looking for a career, consider designing for "the other 90%". The author views poor people as potential customers and has lifted 13 million families out of dollar a day poverty by offering them affordable innovations.
