About Me
As a child, Kelly Wearstler was dragged to many an auction in South Carolina by her architect father and decorating-minded mother, and she hated it. But the bite, initially painful, morphed into a passion that lies at the root of Wearstler's rapidly growing design company, KWID. Ever on the prowl through auction houses and antique shops and shows, Wearstler taps pieces for her interiors that display, at the very least, good form; after they've passed through KWID, they radiate flair.
In a Wearstler interior, everything goes: classic meets modern, nubby meets smooth, gentlemen's club meets ladies' boudoir, ultrasuede meets ultradrama. Wearstler's bag of tricks is as bottomless as Mary Poppins's though much chicer. From it she pulls, depending on the job, a dollop of Chinoiserie, a touch of Courrege, a taste of Hollywood Regency or a pinch of Persia. She doesn't just gild the lily, she lacquers the floors and mirrors the walls. Her current favorite material for kitchen countertops and backsplashes? Honey onyx.
Wearstler is an adventuress, inspired by everything from Ellsworth Kelly paintings to the layering of colors and textures in Thailand to the fish and fossils in the American Museum of Natural History. The results of her risk-taking are Interiors that, above all, make people feel glamorous.
