The High Windows

Updated May 9, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

"HaChalonot HaGvohim" sound a bit like "The Mamas and the Papas" singing Hebrew. But their songs are nice, with a 60ish beat , of course, and good lyrics.

Yossi Azulay (Yossi Azulay)

Updated May 9, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

Ah yes - most of the songs on this album are as "sweet" as his looks on the cover. If you aren't fond of heartfelt ballads and oriental pop songs, then this is probably not for you. At least three of the oriental-beat songs of this album have been adapted for "Rikudei Am" (Israeli folk dance, the national sport of Israelis), and they're really fun to dance.

Lola by Dudu Tasa

Updated May 9, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

Dudu Tassa is great. This CD features some good songs with a beat and quite funk-souly brass, and also the lyrics are quite sophisticated.
I love to listen to this album when I work, but I also have it ready to go on my mp3 player.

The Military Groups - First Years

The Israeli Army has a firm tradition of producing good and reknown music groups. This CD is a great time travel through the 50's and 60's and features songs of the IDF's early "Lahakot".

Like Cinderela by Sarit Hadad

Updated May 8, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

Sarit Hadad is a singer whom people usually either love or hate - nothing in between. She has gone through an interesting change, stylewise, from slightly trashy to perfectly styled (at times almost like Madonna).
Her songs probably belong into the "easy entertainment" corner; they're played at weddings and parties, they're fun and have this greek-style beat that's simply viral. The lyrics? Nothing to write home about, nothing deeply philosophical: love, macho men, lost love, simple life...

This CD was one of her hits, and I think it shouldn't miss on the shelf "for party fun".

In Between by Meir Banai

Updated May 8, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

Meir Banai released this album in 1992, and it is quite a nice, at times calm, mainstream-y album. The lyrics are completely in Hebrew and range from pensive to nostalgic. One of my favourite albums of his.

Yemenite Songs by Ofra Haza

Updated May 8, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

Who doesn't know Ofra Haza, Israel's musical ambassador at the 1983 Eurovision (where she performed "Chai" and ranked second) and performer of movie soundtracks (such as "Prince of Egypt" or "La Reine Margot"). "Im Nin'Alu", a chart breaking single in 1988, eventually made her famous all over the world.

"Yemenite Songs" is probably a lesser known album of Ofra Haza, but it is nevertheless a beautiful one. Being of Yemenite origin herself, she performs popular Yemenite-Jewish songs, such as "Im Nin Alu" or "Ode leEli". The songs are sung in Aramaic.

The Last in the Lower Class by Teapacks

Updated May 8, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

Teapacks, who went under "Tipex" before they got into trouble with the big brand of wipeout fluids, published this CD in 1993, and it was quite an instant hit. It was their second album, and by '93 they still performed in smaller bars. Their album performace which I attended in a small Tel Aviv club in 1993 was great.
The songs added quite a new touch to the Israeli music scene, the lyrics are witty and funny, often critical and on the point of actual political matters.

A beautiful compilation of Yoni Rechter songs, performed live in the studios of Kol Israel and published in 2003. Another one of my favourites, also because the recording beautifully captured the fun everyone had during the performance.

The Songs of Yoni Rechter by Yoni Rechter

Updated May 8, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

This is a wonderful compilation of Yoni Rechter's songs, performed by some of Israel's best known musicians and singers. Yoni Rechter was part of Kaveret, another famous Israeli band.
This CD was released in 2004, and I have it on my playlist ever since then. Not only are the songs well selected, but I love the interpretation by the artists.

Everything is O.K with Me by Boaz Sharabi

Updated May 8, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

Boaz Sharabi is one of Israel's top artists. He has been around for quite a long time now, has published a lot of albums, and he still a favourite with many, many Israelis. This here is one of his successful albums, published in 1984. It features a mix of ballads and pop songs. A certain touch of melancholy is Sharabi's hallmark, and I think it matches really well to his voice.

My Home by Shoshana Damari

Updated May 7, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

Shoshana Damari is "the" voice of the young Israel, or the "Queen of Israeli song". Not only her beautiful dark timbre, but definitely her very oriental pronounciation of Hebrew words is what she is remembered for (she was of Yemenite origin).

These is an album with beautiful songs from the early years, published in 1961.

Going Out Tonight by The Twins trio

Updated May 7, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

I love this CD - it's a republication of the "Twin Trio"s 1966 album "HaLaila Yotzim" (Going Out Tonight); it carries quite a wave of nostalgia. These are the tunes of the young Israel, some songs have what I call "the Kibbutz sound".

Description

Say what - impossible to rap in Hebrew? Ha. Tune in to this. Shabaq Samech are quite cool, and "Cnaan 2000" is my favourite of all their albums.
None of the songs sounds like the other (so no boredom at all), the lyrics are great, and the songs are all danceable. Click over to Israel Music and listen to the samples.

Live In Massada by David Broza

Updated May 7, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

David Broza has this tradition of playing live each year at the Massada Festival, which takes place at the foot of Massada, the ancient fortress next to the Dead Sea. His concerts start late at night and go on into the sunrise - it's not just a tradition, but it's an experience beyond words.
His first live recording was released in 1993, but this here is a DVD of the same concert. One of my favourite concert DVDs on my shelf!

It's All Or Nothing by David Broza

Updated May 7, 2008

Description

David Broza is one of those phantastic performers who seem to have been around forever - "Ze hakol o klum" was released in 2002, and it features some great titles, his charismatic voice and guitar playing, but also the meaningful lyrics, which are so typical for his work.

Ha - Osef (Galei Zahal)

Updated May 7, 2008

Description

Galei Zahal, the IDF radio and broadcasting station, published this 2-CD compilation of the best of the best of favourite songs aired in the recent years. You will recognize the songs, probably, but they come in really nice new interpretations, by such reknown singers such as Yehudit Ravitz, Boaz Sharabi or Esther Ofarim.

Poogy Tales by Kaveret

Updated May 7, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

Kaveret is perhaps "the" Israeli rock band of the 70s. What made them so unique were their songs, often combinations of songs and skits, the witty lyrics and linguistic artistry, and a music style that was quite unique to the scene back then.
This is their first album, published in 1973, and it features such famous songs such as "Poogy Tales", "Grocery Store", "The Crux of the Matter", "Ephraims Boots" and many more.

Noa by Achinoam Nini

Updated May 7, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

Achinoam Nini, or Noa as the West would know her, had her breakthrough in 1991 with "Achinoam Nini & Gil Dor", a live recording. Every following album has been a success. This here, "Noa", is one of my personal favourites and was published 1994. It contains a mix of songs, though most in English, performed with a touching intensity and dedication that it's a joy to listen. And sing along.

Soldier Of Love by Eyal Golan

Updated May 7, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

"Soldier Of Love" (1998) was the big breakthrough album of Eyal Golan. Songs like 'Jafa sheli' and 'Liknot Lach Yahalom' were chart breakers and sung even by children.
The late 90s and early 2000s saw quite a boom of oriental-influenced songs like these; they were the songs played at weddings and parties, though the usual consensus was that they're quite shmaltzy. But they've got a danceable rhythm, they are fun to dance to, and that's why they became so popular.

Nevertheless, if you want to get a sense of Israeli music, then this is a must.

Cup Cozy

Updated Apr 29, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

Just found this Etsy shop that sells these cozies for your coffe to-go. Having a reusable cozy is a start in reducing all the needless waste out there (step two: refuse the single-use cups and lids, bring your own!).
I like the look of these and the clever design - you can carry your cozy rolled up and securely hooked onto your keychain if not in use.

(Attention, international buyers - the shop unfortunately ships to very few European and international locations. I suggest you convo them before your purchase and check for mailing rates.)
