I grew up in Placentia, California and graduated from the University of California, Riverside with a B.S. and M.S. in environmental science. I designed my first website in 1995, and launched a prominent community weblog and internet forum called MetaFilter in 1999. I have a personal weblog called A Whole Lotta Nothing and a photoblog called Ten Years of My Life that was named the 3rd best photo blog in Forbes in 2004. I launched the blog fortuito.us in April 2007 where I post a weekly essay.
