J. R. Watkins Lemon Hand & Cuticle Salve

Updated Jul 22, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

J.R. Watkins hand & cuticle salve is just a fabulous product all around! I loved how my cuticles felt while using it. This salve lasted forever on my hands/nails, even after several hand washes during the day, and they continued to feel soft and moisturized!

The lemon/citron scent is truly lovely. It’s not too lemony; just authentic enough with a touch of feminine sweetness. It felt like silk on my fingertips and then it disappeared ever so gently into my skin with out feeling greasy or sticky.

The label color coordination with the scent of the product is clever as well. I just had a blast having this product and it made me smile every time I opened it up! Once the product is finished, you can re use the tin to organize your paper clips, tacks, or precious coins!

P.S. It worked so nicely that I snuck it onto my very dry ankles and bam! -- my ankles felt so soft. (via Palacinka)

Lancome Poudre Elephant Teint Blush and Bronzer

Updated Jul 22, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

Many cosmetic lines are featuring more and more beautiful works of art within the actual makeup palette, and this one is truly a stand out creation. This is part of the Lancôme Maharani Jewels Collection 2008. The image etched into the powder is a beautiful elephant, as an ode to India’s culture. The brilliance is that each of the 3 colors in the actual elephant is a beautiful shade that is part of the bronzer. There’s a light pink, deep shimmery gold and deep reddish/orange. The elephant itself is actually “raised” a bit for a nice 3 dimensional effect. The outer compact is a nice Tortoiseshell-brown which works nicely with the theme for this collection.

I used my bronzer brush to swirl all the colors together and just loved the flattering, healthy glow effect it gave me (swatch above gives an idea of what it looks like together). This bronzer had just the right amount of shimmer, the color had very good staying power and best of all, this will work with all skin tones since the three shades work to pick up and enhance all undertones. For those women who have very dark brown complexions, this can serve as a very nice highlighter on brow bones and cheek bones used in conjunction with your blush. This just made me smile every time I wore it. Truly a treasure and will also be a collectors item for sure. (via Palacinka)

Clarins UV Plus Day Screen SPF 40

Updated Jul 22, 2008

Description

Ah, sunscreen, so many choices…and so little time. For my face, I am very finicky about the texture, the smell, the staying power and also the convenience level of the packaging (must be travel/gym ready). This new Clarins sunscreen was a relief in a sea of sunscreen I have been testing for the last month or so.

I love the little cylinder tube which is super portable. The formula itself is very lightweight and on the thin side, but so concentrated I didn’t need much to cover my face (so it is very long lasting). There is a light fragrance, which dissipated quickly. The lotion glided on my skin without a trace of stickiness, white cast, or oil. The finish was matte. I found that it was light enough to be layered over my favorite serum and under my liquid bronzer or tinted moisturizer that I tend to favor in the summer months. As a matter of fact, this is actually the perfect skin primer before makeup application. The lasting power was fantastic on days I was working, running around outside or actually sunning at the beach. I had no breakouts or irritation from the product and it didn’t run or melt on my skin. It also left my skin soft and moisturized without feeling oily, so on the weekends I would just wear this with a little mascara and lip color and I was good to go!

This is a non-chemical sunscreen which many of you will also appreciate. It’s made from 100% minerals. Yes, this is another product that is indeed worth every penny and I will be stockpiling!

Note: As an added bonus if you are like me and always around computer screens, Clarins has added protection against electromagnetic waves in this formula. (via Palacinka)

ModelCo ExfoliateBody Wipes

Updated Jul 22, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

These body wipes by ModelCo take the “Wet Wipes” concept to the next level. They are Uber Chic wet wipes for adults – and they were super effective.

Before my shower I would pull out one of the rectangular-shaped wipes and use the textured side (with several rows of exfoliating granules built into the wipe) and applied it to my major trouble spots – my elbows and knees. It should be noted that the textured side is not painfully rough, but it is very abrasive, and not as wet as a normal wet wipe. This is what makes it a good choice for those who have skin that is not very sensitive and prefer a more aggressive scrub. The fragrance is a pleasant pink grapefruit that does not linger.

I was very impressed with how easily the wipes got rid of the dead skin and made these areas feel nice and soft. I then turned it over to the softer, buffing side of the wipe and applied that in the circular motion for a minute or two. When I was finished, my skin looked much, much, better, and after using them several times a week for several weeks, my skin was absolutely glowing.

While the container itself is a tad bulky for travel, I simply put them in a zip lock bag for packing, and then kept the container at home or the gym. Just remember that since they are a drier wipe, it’s essential that you remember to close the lid completely.

I love innovation, effectiveness, and the bright pink spoke to me as well. This is a winner in my book.

Note: This is NOT a product for those with sensitive skin! (via Palacinka)

Kanebo Relaxing Body Wash

Updated Jul 11, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

Kanebo makes one of the best body care brands in the world. Why? Because their products combine great ingredients which really care for skin, feature a subtle yet still memorable fresh fragrance and create a “luxury” cleansing feeling.

The relaxing body wash is a smooth, silky, pearlescent light mint green color (as is the actual packaging). With a gentle press on the bottle the concentrated wash came out and was so soft and refreshing on my skin. (The fragrance actually brought me back to a wonderful business trip I took to Tokyo a few years ago where I had a “feeding frenzy” trying amazing Japanese skin care products). It was the green tea and bamboo extract fragrance that took me back. It a really is a light, relaxing scent.

I loved using this at the end of the day, especially after a hot, humid day, as this removed every trace of city dirt and grime, and left my skin soft and supple. If you have very dry skin, you will need a bit of lotion on key points like elbows, knees and legs, but otherwise, this provided a great amount of light moisture without feeling like there was any film or residue left on my skin.

A pampering treat that every beauty lover should have in their body care collection! (via Palacinka)

Kanebo Relaxing Foaming Body Scrub

Updated Jul 11, 2008

Description

This smooth (yet fairly large) grained, foaming body scrub is the perfect complement to the body wash (see review above). I used this about 3x week before the body wash. After working all my critical spots (elbows, knees, feet, décolletage), and then rinsing, it left my skin smooth and super soft. The grains in the scrub are cushioned in a soft, fresh smelling gel/cream emulsion, which was very effective at exfoliating but not harsh on my skin at all.

The tube itself is a fairly large size, and I used for several weeks and did not even get half way though it. The fragrance mimics that of the body wash, again a green tea infusion. Its lovely pale mint green packaging looks nice in the shower as well for all you packaging junkies out there too! (via Palacinka)

Sonia Kashuk Blending Sponge

Updated Jul 11, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

If you already love the act of applying makeup, then this will really put a smile on your face!

This cute little blue sponge is a jack of all trades. The sponge is firm upon taking it out of the clear plastic case, so the first thing I did was to the sponge and run it under water, getting it completely wet. It doubled in size and then had soft, pillow-like appearance. Next, I squeezed the sponge out very well so that it was slightly damp. Then I swiped it across my cream foundation and dabbed it first in the mid section of my face near my nose, sweeping it outward towards the edges of my face (cheek, forehead, and chin). Within a minute or two the foundation was dry and the coverage was fantastic. With the sponge I was able to get to all the corners of my eyes and nose.

The top of the sponge is narrower and perfect for dabbing around the corners of the nose, or on blemishes, while the bottom, wider part is what I used to actually apply my foundation on the majority of my face. With the sponge, my foundation looked natural, yet had a very nice med/sheer coverage with a tad bit of a dewy appearance. For my concealer, I dabbed a bit directly under my eye with my concealer brush and then used the top narrow part of the sponge to tap into my skin until it blended seamlessly.

With cream blush, I found the best way to use it was by tapping the bottom half lightly on the blush and then applying in a circular motion on my cheeks. Beautiful! This is a great little makeup tool that I’ll always have in my kit.

Note: Here is a rinsing tip. Try rinsing the sponge after use by letting as much of the makeup wash off as possible with plain water. Then apply a small dab of a simple gel cleanser to clean any remaining makeup from the sponge. It doesn’t come with a storage case, per say, but you can try setting it atop the actual clear case that the sponge comes in to dry. (via Palacinka)

Sonia Kashuk Eliminate Shine Mattifying Spray Powder

Updated Jul 11, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

The afternoon “glow” – which is really a nice word for shine, is something that I look to avoid at all costs. In the summer heat, it’s usually an uphill battle, with various products producing so-so-to-good results.

Sonia Kashuk has created a product which goes in the very good category. It’s a spray powder which I sprayed directly on to my powder brush as per the instructions. Within seconds I could see my t-zone shine disappearing. My skin felt soft and smooth and the powder has a nice, subtle scent.

During a few of the days I tested this, I was in 90+ degree heat/humidity and on those days I did need to give myself another spritz during the afternoon, but all in all, I was really pleased with how it tamed my oilies without breaking me out. It also worked really well with both my foundation and tinted moisturizer. It didn’t change the color, ball up or create dry patches. The powder is fine and mostly translucent, but there is still a lightly colored pigment in this powder, so this will work best on women up to a Kerry Washington shade. Great for travel too & fantastic price to boot! (via Palacinka)

Thierry Mugler Cils Vinyle

Updated Jun 26, 2008

Description

Every now and then a cosmetic product comes across my desk that doesn’t seem like it would rock my world; but ends up doing just that. Mugler’s vinyl gloss is the latest product to do this for me.

I absolutely fell in love with this “brush-less & comb-less” mascara. The packaging is of course right up Mugler’s alley – modern, slightly odd and yet still sophisticated. The mascara tube itself is a unique concept that includes a long, narrow “paint brush” (more like the type of brush you would find in a lip gloss tube) which I applied over my lashes. The shiny mirror on the top echoes his “Mirror Collection” theme.

I found the liquid formula itself was a thicker version of the usual mascara formula, but was surprisingly easy to work with. When brushing over my lashes with the applicator I was amazed that I was able to get all of my lashes – from the really short tiny ones in the corners to the longer ones in the center. The gloss made my lashes deep, shiny black, very full, lush and long. It was a very glam look, but I found it could still work for daytime. During the day there was no flaking, running or smudging at all. This is also amazing for a dramatic sexy, night time look, with a dark smokey eye or with a sweep of black liquid eyeliner on the top lid. It’s a luxury purchase, but for something this unique, beautiful and amazing it is truly worth it.

Note: For really high-impact lashes this can be layered over one coat of your favorite Volumizing mascara

Nars Makeup Primer SPF 20

Updated Jun 26, 2008

Description

If you have drier skin like me, and are looking for a great primer that also has sun protection, then this is a great choice.

I found that a little of the medium/thick-weight cream went a long way to cover my face in the morning before applying my makeup. It went on smoothly and sank in fairly quickly. I found it very moisturizing and it also did not give my skin a grayish cast, despite the sunscreen ingredients. Throughout the day it did a very effective job of keeping my makeup in place (no running, streaking or dry patches), even on hot/humid days and several business trips via plane.

This is a very nice little skin luxury from the master NARS!

Note: This formula will work best on drier/combination skin as it may be too heavy for oily skin. (via Palacinka)

Missoni Acqua Eau de Toilette

Updated Jun 26, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

This is a delightful fragrance that will not be for every one.

Let me explain.

Missoni has created a unique scent that lends itself to a “watery” sugary sweetness, which is fresh, but somehow still unfamiliar (Melon & Grapefruit notes). It’s a bright blast off of a fragrance from the beginning, and then settles into a still unusual mix of flowers, (such as freesia and iris).

It’s fresh, light and tropical, but because of those opening fruity notes, it may not appeal to those who lean more towards the lighter citrus or oceanic fragrances. The staying power is nice, and as the day went on, I also picked up the bergamot and the muguet. I felt refreshed all day, especially on very hot days.

The bottle is simply divine and very much in keeping with the style of the house of Missoni. All in all, this is a fragrance that will stand out, and may push your nose into some new territory – which is always a good thing to me!

Note: The body lotion is fabulous as well, and fantastic to layer with.

Fragrance notes: Grapefruit, Bergamot, Melon, Narcisse, Muguet, Violet, Blue Freesia, Peony, Tuscan Iris, Petal Jasmine, Sole. (via palacinka)

Nude Skincare Advanced Smoothing Complex

Updated Jun 26, 2008

Description

I love serums and more and more, using great quality organic products when I can find them. This fits the bill on both ends.

I used this serum 2x day after cleansing. The serum is in a pump bottle, which makes it very hygienic, and I noted that a slight push of the top of the pump was all that was needed to cover my entire face. The texture felt slightly gelatinous and sticky on my fingers, but once I applied it to my face; I found that it soaked into my skin quickly and easily. My skin at once looked smooth, felt hydrated and my pores were reduced in the t-zone as well.

This was the perfect start to applying my makeup, and became a great primer for me. The fragrance is also really pretty (a sweet ylang ylang fragrance), and dissipated after a few minutes. After several weeks of use, my skin really did have a brighter and more even toned appearance; my fine lines were softened, my skin never felt dry and my makeup always stayed looking fresh. CHANEL Robertson Boulevard Collection Nail Polish

Updated Jun 26, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

I was so happy to try one of these in-demand Robertson Boulevard limited edition colors from CHANEL. Out of the four shades in the collection, this is one of the less “edgy” shades, but really pretty and flattering nonetheless.

L.A. sunset really is reminiscent of the shades in sunset! It’s a warm, medium coral color with a touch of salmon pink (note: it appears more red in the picture). It’s bright but not neon. It’s such a happy summer color. I loved wearing this when I got a pedicure. It looked even better when I got a tan. The formula is smooth and easy to apply, and looked great with either one coat for more of a salmon stain, or with two for the brighter effect. It’s shiny with no shimmer and as I’ve found many of the CHANEL formulas, has great lasting power with no chipping.

I think this is one of the most versatile colors in the collection and should be added to their permanent collection. This is perfect those women are out of their teens and 20’s that still want to be fashion forward yet still have a flattering color that will work with their clothing, lifestyle, work etc. This shade will work best up to a Queen Latifah shade.

Neil Morris Fragrance in Afire

Updated Jun 20, 2008

Description

There’s sexy, sexier and then “Afire”!

It’s smoldering, hazy, heady….from the first spritz until the end of the night. What impressed me most (and is also a feature of other Neil Morris fragrances I’ve tried) is the various opening notes (in this case citrus, berries and caramel) actually seemed to morph into additional combinations when the middle note of frankincense came in later in the day.

For those of you who think that berries, caramel and vanilla would make such a scent too sweet, no worries here – somehow, magically the sweetness is tempered with more woody, spicy and drier notes that make this such a sensual olfactory treat.

This is a truly unique scent, one that a woman who is confident in her femininity should wear, but perfectly suitable for day or night because as saucy and tempting a scent as this is, it’s not overwhelming or offensive in any way. A little goes a long way and the staying power is incredible. This is going in my top 10 fragrances of all time." (via Palacinka)

Stella McCartney Stella Eau de Parfum Roll-On

Updated Jun 18, 2008

4 people recommended this item

Description

I tried this fragrance a few years ago and recently picked it up again in Sephora because this cute, slim, sophisticated Roll-On bottle caught my eye!

This is a fragrance that I really do enjoy. Its rose based, but in no way a “Rose” perfume. The opening notes are of roses, but quickly the mandarin and amber come into play to give it such a soft, fresh and sexy twist. It really is a one of a kind fragrance. The lasting power is fantastic and the scent continued to develop nicely on me throughout the day even without reapplying with the peony notes melding with the amber. I got several compliments while I wore this one! When combined with this modern roll-on packaging, it is a big winner in my book.

I carried this everywhere I went – it’s a perfect size (about 4 ½ in” long). Since it’s slim it also easily fit in my jeans and the slimmest of evening bags. In addition to the lovely scent and modern, convenient packaging; this has a fantastic price. This is perfect for a little summer wedding favor gift for a bridal party, or graduation gift for the beauty/fragrance lover in your life.

Tip: If you roll a bit behind you knees in the morning on a hot day, the scent will rise with your body temperature during the day. Nothing else needed!

Notes: Rose, Peony Flower, Mandarin, Rose Absolute, Amber. (via Palacinka)

MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator

Updated Jul 9, 2008

Description

This is one of the biggest beauty surprises for me so far all year.

I actually did not know that this was part of a new MAC collection (Future Earth Collection). True to its name, it is black, gooey and grainy upon opening the jar. But any unpleasant associations end there….

When I first started applying it I noted with a smile that it really did look like I was “rolling around in the dirt”. However, that temporary visual effect was worth the spectacular results I got. When I used the scrub for the first time I used it on dampened skin and immediately felt the difference – the texture of the scrub, which is a gel based-grain scrub, changed to a velvety smooth cream and exfoliated my skin gently but thoroughly. After rinsing it off my skin looked amazing and was smooth, super clean with no dryness. I also used it as a leave on mask for 10 minutes 2x week and it always left my skin supple. With regular use, my skin was glowing, my blackheads were gone and my skin tone also evened out.

This is simply an outstanding scrub and I cannot live without this one! (via Palacinka)

Murad Acne Spot Treatment

Updated May 30, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

This little wonder came into my life the very day that a pimple cropped up in my t- zone (usual) and under my eye! (not usual at all!). Needless to say I was expecting great results from this product as I wanted these pimples out of my life -- pronto!

I applied my first application in the evening. I cleansed with a gentle cleanser first and then applied the treatment using the applicator tip (no fingers really helps with keeping the area clean). The texture is fairly thick with a gel/cream feel. I only needed press lightly on the tube to release enough cream for my blemishes. It took about a minute to dry completely and then I was off to bed…

In the morning I was simply stunned. The redness of the pimples was significantly reduced and the pimples themselves had almost completely disappeared. I did not experience any flaking around the trouble spots either. I applied a bit more in the morning and by the end of the day I could barely see the pimples!

This is an excellent spot treatment for those of you who even have drier skin, since the formula is not super drying. In short, this is effective, convenient and the perfect size for travel/gym! (via Palacinka)

Shiseido Benefiance Pure Retinol Intense Treatment Eye Mask

Updated May 30, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

This was the perfect little mask to sooth my tired eyes at the end of the long day and after my frequent flights to both the west coast and Europe (6+ hours).

I really like the packaging in which each pair is individually wrapped (perfect for travel). The scent is the signature soft Shiseido scent which was relaxing, and the eye masks themselves felt cool on my skin. With the design and shape of the masks, they stayed in place under my eye area whether I was lying down, sitting or walking around my place.

After about 15 minutes my under eye area was brighter, my lines were softened and the skin surrounding the eye was super soft and supple. I also used some of the residual retinol serum from the mask on my eye area and face in the evening or the next day (I sealed it well and put it in a mini zip lock).

I found after using them a few times a week for several weeks, my eye area was indeed brighter and I had an overall much fresher look (especially when I applied in the AM after a late night!). These are a luxury, but it’s such an effective treatment it is worth it. These masks will not necessarily make dark circles disappear however. This is more of a moisturizing, soothing and overall toning product. (via Palacinka)

Tarte 4 Day Stay Lash Stain

Updated May 30, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

Tarte is always on the forefront of product innovation, and this product is their most recent example of this. It should be noted however, as in life; everything is not for everybody, no matter how good it might be.

Case in point: This is a lash stain (not really a lash enhancing mascara) and therein lies the beauty and/or frustration of this product, depending on your needs.

For someone like me with lashes that are not truly dark, and very fine, this stain was perfect to give me a nice, enhanced, natural look that was truly trouble free and long lasting. The stain deepened my lashes and gave me a more defined look (perfect for running around on the weekends or going to the gym). My lashes were lengthened slightly and had nice separation. I also liked the curved brush and the non-clumpy formula.

The stain did not flake or run (and I even went to the pool/sauna with it) which was great. However, it did not really increase the volume of my lashes (no Va Va Voom lash effect in other words). For this natural effect, it did indeed last about 4 days. I was very careful about applying it, since this is a stain (so take care that it does not touch your under eye area or face). Of course, it is possible to take off, with a generous amount of oil-based makeup remover and a Q-Tip.)

It should be noted that I also tried this with along with a Volumizing mascara and it did work well, but I did not get the 4 day results. It only lasted about two days. All in all, this is a great choice for those of you who want a natural look, love to apply a product and forget about it, and don’t need/want much lash “enhancement.

Note: When wearing this formula you cannot use any oil based product near the eye area or when removing makeup, as it will cause the stain to come off. (via Palacinka)

Givenchy Prismissime Mat & Glow Compact Face Powder

Updated May 30, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

This is a fabulous palette that also works to cut down on the amount of products you need to use/pack to achieve a really nice, sexy “glow”.

I loved the sleek and modern packaging, with a cute little brush included in the bottom compartment. Although when I used it at home I applied with my bronzer brushes. As a nice little touch it also includes the names some of the most glamorous vacation destinations on the front of the pack in bold pink– Monaco, Tokyo, Ibiza, Capri, etc…

The compact has nine color cubes in all: three shimmery powders (gold, chocolate, bronze); three light to medium tan powders with a bit of a peach undertone; and three medium to chocolate brown powders with some gold elements.

The shimmery shades are separated from the matte shades, which makes it very easy to pick the type of look that you want. During the day I tended to use the mat shades and apply the shimmer as a subtle highlight on my cheekbones and as a highlighter on my eyes. At night I would swirl the brush over all the cubes and build up to much more noticeable shimmery bronzed look on my cheeks and my eyes. The texture of all the shades are silky smooth and the lasting power is very good.

This compact will work best for eyes and cheeks up to a Kerry Washington complexion, however, if used just for eyes and as a highlighter this will work on all skin tones, even as deep as Alex Wek, for example. (via Palacinka)

Phyto PHYTOPLAGE Moisturizing Hair & Body Wash

Description

This is a fantastic, luxurious 2-in1 product that is perfect for summer trips to the beach or just trips in general! From Phyto I would expect no less, since I am a big fan of their hair products which also work very well for me.

The wash is a smooth silky liquid that is thick and rich. It’s very concentrated so just a few squirts of the tube produced all I needed to cleanse both my body and my hair. The lather is super creamy with a rich fragrance that I loved. It’s a lovely, decadent spicy, slightly floral scent that was not too overpowering, but did linger on my body and hair nicely after rinsing off.

Post shower my skin was very soft and hydrated and I skipped using lotion on most days (very dry skins will still need an after shower moisturizer). My hair was soft, shiny and not weighed down at all. All traces of chlorine/sand from the beach were gone from my as well.

Note: As a shampoo, this formula works best on naturally straight, wavy and healthy relaxed hair. (via Palacinka)

Avene Thermal Spring Water

Description

Many people would say water is water, but I think that it’s not always the case. In Asia and Europe most of my friends and associates always have a water spray on hand and use it regularly. They also have great skin!

I loved this thermal water and can say that it is one of the best water sprays I have used. I think it worked wonders for setting my makeup and also when I wanted to dampen my cosmetic sponge to apply my foundation for a natural, dewy effect. It’s a very convenient sized tube that’s perfect for any bag, the plane or the office/gym. It was so refreshing during the day or after work before touching up my makeup for an evening out. This was also wonderful to use in power masks or cloth masks as opposed to regular water.
