Yves Saint Laurent Palette Couleurs D'Afrique

Updated May 14, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

It goes without saying that the design of this eye palette, like many of the YSL palettes, is exquisite, unique and truly beautiful.

But it doesn’t just stop there -- the colors themselves are wonderful and perfect for summer. There are 4 colors in the palette which were inspired by various African terrains. There is a deep chocolate brown (with a touch of eggplant), a true orange (with a touch of rust), a medium creamy yellow shade and a beige shadow. The brown and orange colors are bold, but were buildable if I wanted a more dramatic look. None of the colors has shimmer, they were silky and easy to blend and were a pleasure to play with and combine. The lasting power of the shadows was also good.

I didn’t think I would gravitate towards the orange shade as much as I did. The orange was very flattering and not shocking or over the top in any way. I loved combining the orange all over the lid in a light layer with the chocolate in the crease and as an eyeliner on its own or over my eyeliner pencil. I also liked using the yellow and beige for a softer look. These shades are varied enough with darks, brights and neutrals that it will work with all skin tones as well. There is a lot of shadow in the pan and each is very pigmented. This combined with the beautiful limited edition palette design makes it definitely worth the price. (via Palacinka)

The Multiple by NARS in Maui

Updated May 7, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

I’ve used many NARS products over the years, but never a multiple! I was as pleased as I thought I would be. This was the perfect product to use in the morning when I needed to get out of the door quickly or on the weekends when I just needed a basic look. I used this on my eyes, cheeks and lips and find it excellent for all three. The texture is a little dry (so if you have very dry skin a moisturizing primer is essential!) but I that's why it's so long-lasting. I applied it with my fingers, blended well and created a nice stain on my lips, and a nice flattering color on my eyes and cheeks.

With this and a little liner, mascara and powder and I was ready in five minutes! This shade is a dusty, pinky peach, the perfect shade for me! This shade has enough red to give a me fresh looking cheeks, but also enough orange/pink tones to really warm it up in a sophisticated way. I just looked really healthy and glowy when I wore it. Also it seemed to bring out my eyes dramatically. It’s incredibly flattering and also very versatile. It has a great stay-put texture without being drying or cakey – my color didn’t fade at all during the day. This particular shade will work very well up to a Beyonce complexion. (via Palacinka)

Yves Saint Laurent Eye Colour Touch - Steel Blue

Updated Mar 12, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

This is a lovely color from YSL’s spring 2008 Pop Romanticism Collection. It’s very true to the color described, as it was a very nice light gray/blue on my skin. A pastel color that did not make me look washed out. The formula was fantastic – light and airy on my skin and the shadow lasted all day without creasing or smudging. The pen applicator was so easy to use and quick too! About two swipes on each lid are all I needed. I sometimes finished blending with a brush, but it is certainly possible to still get a very polished look without it.

Another bonus is it’s also water resistant, so it wears very well in hot/humid weather. I loved pairing this with a soft rose on the cheeks and lips, which worked well for daytime, and with an extra coat of mascara and a high shine gloss on top of the rose lip for an evening look. This grey will work with all skin tones as it’s not a pale pastel; the blue gives the grayness depth that will show up on very dark skin tones as well e.g. Serena Williams – Alex Wek.

I would love to see them expand into even more colors for fall 2008! (via Palacinka.com)

M·A·C 'Fafi' Eyes - Nordstrom

Updated Feb 29, 2008

4 people recommended this item

Description

I have actually been a fan of Fafi’s work for some time now, so I was over the moon when I heard that MAC would be collaborating with her on a collection together. The packaging is everything a “girly girl” like me loves (and a collector’s item to be sure!). Note: The girls on the packaging are stickers, not printed on the case itself. I really loved all of these colors, and felt that they really did invoke the spirit of Fafi’s creations.

I used the eye shadows together and often separately. Hey, a nice shimmery neutral is a beige limited edition color which, on my eyelid, was very flattering. This color has great pigmentation was easy to blend. Howzat, which is a blueish purplely gray that blends like a dream was great for applying in the crease and lining my eyes for a smoky eye with a twist. The other colors in the quad are Vanilla (a nice highlighter) and Pink Venus (a fun crease and lid color).

I got so many different types of looks from this palette. I enjoyed using Pink Venus with both Hey for a hint of something fun, and with Howzat for a more dramatic night time look. For a more subtle, day time look, I used the Vanilla and Hey with Howzat as a liner. The Howzat, in particular is a soft, smudgeable color that wears for hours and hours, even without primer.

This palette as a whole will work best up to a Gabrielle Union shade, but some of the shades, like Howzat, will work well on all skin tones. (via Palacinka)

Lancome L.U.C.I EYES light color in motion duo eye shadow

Updated Mar 10, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

This particular product is the perfect marriage of product innovation, luxury, and out of-the-box thinking in terms of product packaging. L.U.C.I EYES light color in motion duo eye shadow in Apricot is a brilliant shade. It looked so vibrant in the “shell” that it is encased in. As a matter of fact, the shell itself actually has a heft to it such that you really feel like you have picked up an actual shell on the beach! I also thought the peal in the upper left hand corner is a brilliant touch and the shell like detail on the outside of the shell case is just beautiful.

As for the shadows themselves, I could do nothing but marvel at how the apricot when applied on my lid became this lovely mix of bronze, pink and copper. I often wore just this shade because I was so happy with it. But of course I wanted to try the white photonic shade that comes with it too at times. With just a touch of the white shade, the apricot became, pearly, iridescent yet not too bright. The way the light reflected off of the shade was amazing. I loved that essentially you can get three different shadow looks from this compact.

I could use the apricot alone, the white photonic eye shadow over it, the white photonic shadow alone (or as a highlighter on the brow bone) or sometimes I would get a completely different color by putting the photonic shadow on first, and then the apricot! This color will work with all skin tones, but if you are darker than a Serena Williams shade, this will work better as a highlighting shade, mixed with deeper coppers and browns. This is truly an innovation in color cosmetics, and a definitely collector’s item for the packaging as well. (via Palacinka)

Lancôme 'Ombre Glacée' Cooling Gel Illuminator

Updated Mar 10, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

The Cooling Eye Gel Illuminator is one of my favorite products from the LUCI collection. It’s a very light cream eye shadow that appears to be an opalescent pearl shade out of the tube, but as soon as it hit my skin it turned into the most beautiful combination or soft pink, peach and apricot, reflecting different colors wherever the light hit it. It was noticeable but definitely not too over the top or distracting. I loved the effect!

I used it on my brow bone on top of my cheekbones and even experimented applying it on top of a neutral power shadow. It really brought out my features. It very creamy in consistency and does have a very brief, cooling effect which was pleasant. I also applied just a little with a small brush on the inner corners of my eyes to brighten my entire eye area (great after a late night!). Because this color reflects light off of the skin, this looks great on all skin tones as well! On some people they will see more pink, others more of a peach or even violet tone at times. Clarins Color Fizz Collection Single Eye Shadow in Sunny Yellow

Updated Mar 10, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

I’ve always been very pleased with Clarins skin care, so I was expecting great things from the cosmetics, and it did not disappoint. Sunny Yellow is part of their Spring ‘08 Color Fizz line. In the compact (very sleek, modern and I loved the mirror inside) it appeared to be as sunny a yellow as the name would suggest.

When I applied the color on my lid, I found it very pigmented, smooth and very blendable. It's a great true warm sunny yellow color that really brightened my whole face. On me it showed up as a true yellow on me, but with a touch on gold. I also found that it worked well layered with bronzes and pretty caramel shades to create a soft, pretty look.
I was very impressed with the staying power of this shadow, which was amazing.

This can be applied lighter for a day time look that is quite appropriate for a work setting or more intensely for a more dramatic look in the evening. I also found that this color looked best with a dark brown or brown eyeliner to soften the yellow effect a bit. This color will work best on warmer complexions and up to a Gabrielle Union shade. L'Oréal PARIS HIP CREAM SHADOW PAINT INTENSITY PIGMENTS in Nervy

Updated Jan 29, 2008

Description

What an amazing concept that L’Oreal has crafted to perfection! I loved that these tubes include a little brush and case (which has a little “well” on the lower left hand side where you can mix the shade (with other cream shadows as well). I applied with the brush that came with it and they applied evenly & smoothly (for those of you who can’t give up your cream eye shadow brushes, yes this did also work well with mine, but you can’t beat the small compact one included for touchups and travel!

Nervy is a cool frosty taupe that read a bit greyer on my skin. This cream shadow is slightly shimmery and deeply pigmented. I was impressed by the eye shadow not creasing after 10+ hrs of wear as well. It was truly amazing. The formula is virtually budge proof once applied (I swiped it on my hand to test the color and then tried to rinse it off. It actually took several washings with soap before it was gone).

I also loved using this as a base for powder shadows (yes it also works well with the HIP powder shadows and the color truth eye liner ). All in all, this is a really pretty neutral color that will work with all skin tones and can be layered to make it a more dramatic color as well. A little dab (as small as a pen point actually) is more than enough to cover both eye lids. I found that I could also use my finders to blend it to really get a fine, detailed look as well. This is a truly innovative product and an amazing buy to boot! (via Palacinka)

Stila Noire Palette

Updated Mar 12, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

The Noire Palette is a lovely palette for a “cool face”, featuring periwinkle blue shadow, pearly pink lavender eye shadow and a cool pink blush.

The palette itself has a lovely, unusual design of silver and white flowers and vines with a black background. The black felt on the white and silver is a nice touch The magnetized palette opens up to 3 eye shadows and one blush. No mirror included in the palette. The pans can be taken out and exchanged for the individual Stila eye shadow and blush pans.

The top left eye shadow in the Noire Palette is a light pearly pink. I found this to be beautiful for highlighting. The top right eye shadow is a periwinkle blue, which I tended to blend with the bottom left eye shadow which is a sparkly black that was excellent for a smoky eye look. The blush in the bottom right spot is a bright pink.

When I used the periwinkle I tended to layer this one more heavily as it is not as pigmented as the others. It read a little more blue/grey on my skin and was very pretty. I tended to use the glittery black quite a bit as both an eye shadow and it also made a nice, soft charcoal liner for a daytime appropriate but smoky look.

The blush is actually the winner of the palette. It’s a bright but deep pink color. It looks a little bright in the pan but goes on really sheer, natural and flattering. It just looked like pretty flushed pink cheeks which really complimented my skin tone and not bright pink obvious blush. Because the blush is very pigmented I used it with a light hand.

The cost is also a great deal as opposed to buying eye shadow and blush pans plus palette or compact costs. This palette will work best up to an Iman complexion. (via Palacinka)

Stila Blanc Palette

Updated Mar 12, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

I absolutely love this palette. The packaging is beautiful, with a beautiful vintage velvet black vine with red buds design (creating a subtle “S” for Stila I suppose?) contrasted against a stark white background. One of the best features about the packaging is that the pans are removable (magnetic) and the palette can be reused.

All four colors matched perfectly together. The two stars of the palette are the gold eye shadow (upper right hand corner) which is just gorgeous and it made my brown eyes "pop!" Is a beautifully rich gold that is warm, has depth and would look good on everyone. Each of the shadows is buttery smooth and is highly pigmented, making for easy application and long wear. The second standout is the blush. It is beautiful and gave me a natural flush. It is very pigmented though so it should be applied with a very fluffy brush and layered lightly. The blush has no shimmer, it's a matte finish.

The other two eye shadows are neutral ones. The lightest shade I used as a very subtle highlight or as a wash. It gave me just a subtle shine. The other shadow is a pretty chocolate shimmer. With the exception of the lightest shade, everything else is super pigmented so use a light hand. Note: The packaging is beautiful, but if you keep this in your purse as opposed to home and it bangs around a lot those fine black threads creating the vine decoration on the cover will shed.

If you're looking for a nice nude palette with a twist this is it! It became my go-to when I felt inspired to use neutral and unique bright colors together. And long after this palette's is finished I will be able to continue to enjoy the beauty of the packaging. It is a gift that keeps on giving.

The palette as a whole will work best up to a Gabrielle Union complexion, but the eye shadows will work on all skin tones. (via Palacinka)

Perfect eye shadow duo for those with darker complexions. Can use both shades to enhance eyes!! L'Oreal HiP is a great product for those who love variety and intense colors. I would worry that the darker color is too dark, but it blends nicely againist skin tones and doesn't cause much overkill. I'd reccomend this product to anyone who isn't afraid of dramatic color! When I tried them I was skeptical because I haven't had much luck with all creme eyeshadows, but these are winner! This particular one is called nudes, and has lots of neutral colors. Hard Candy Take Out Makeup Kit: Combination Sets

Updated Aug 3, 2007

Description

OK girls --for those of you who love cute makeup packaging and also expect a quality product, Hard Candy has created the ultimate kit! I LOVE this kit and by the end of my review period, I could not pry this out of my bag! (Yes, I especially loved the adorable Chinese take out package!!!)

This is super small – (1"in x 3.5"in x 2” in) and light weight to carry with me for touch ups. Now on to the actual kit contents…

This very cute multi-level (3 levels) makeup palette contains 8 tiny eye shadows in various colors (Note: they are on the sparkly side), 2 concealers, a blush, a bronzer, 6 lip glosses, tiny black eyeliner and black mascara. Most of the eye shadows are very workable and flattering shades and the lip glosses are cute with many browns, reds and pink which are on the sheer/medium finish side. I found that my favorite product in this case was a total surprise -- the concealers...yes, the concealers. The coverage was fantastic and the color match was very good as well. This kit really contains everything you need to create a full face!

The products also smell yummy, like sugar, the blush is a nice color, and the bronzer is also very flattering with good wear. The mascara is GREAT as well and I would use it solo. The palette itself has a cute mirror, and while the applicators are fine for on the go application, overall I found better results using my professional brushes applying it at home (via sephora)

Hard Candy Cosmetics - Eye Candy Eyeshadows

Updated Jul 20, 2007

1st to recommend

Description

Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! This is a finely milled caramel/peachy color and the container is adorable; it's this bright baby pink slide out compact.

The texture is matte with tiny amounts of glitter, but depending on what you do by day (working in a more conservative office for example); it may be a bit too glittery. Overall, however, the glitter can be layered for a more pronounced effect. I did a light wash on my lids on most days and it was fine. At night I really layered it and it became more of a peachy-bronze tone which went well with my brown eyes and recent tan.

I found that this worked alone for a “light eye” look with a little punch, and it’s beautiful also as a highlighter on the brown bone and to layer with darker browns and peach colors.

It's great for an all over color wash. The colors are sheer, easy to apply, stay on for a decent amount of time, and have that perfect shimmer level to them. This color will work for all skin tones, but for very dark complexions (e.g. Alex Wek) will work better as a highlighter. I’m excited to try more shadows from this line! (via hardcandy)

The texture of this eye shadow is very fine milled and silky it feels like a cream going on. This color blended beautifully. It's a gorgeous shimmery medium pinky/gold shade that really brings out my eyes - it goes on much more subtle than it looks in the pan. The shadow has amazing pigment and texture, with very fine shimmer. Description

I've been a big fan of Sue Devitt's products for some time now, but even I was stunned at how much I loved this color and how truly unique it is! First off, this shadow, like all of her silky sheen's, is truly like brushing silk across your lids. The texture is smooth, blendable and yet somewhat creamy at the same time. The color itself is simply stunning. At first glance it looks like a deep eggplant with a touch of grey, but on the eyelid however, it shows up a bit more brown and really complimented my eye color. There is a sheen (but not sparkle) to this color which is SO flattering. It wears during the day very well with very little smudging or creasing. I used it as a base eye color, and also wet to go over a smoky eye look at night. This is a color that every woman should own when you want to get away from a basic brown, and not quite do a more bright color like purple, green or blue. Simply beautiful like all of Sue's products. Sue Devitt Silky Sheen Eye Shadow, Prague

There's a lot to like about this eyeshadow which has a luxurious texture. I saw this come across my desk and couldn't help trying it out because it is such a springy fresh color! I was completely surprised to find it was also quite wearable, even with the bright acidity of the color my dark green eyes.

Prague is a very bright yellow-green shadow. It leans more on the yellow side than the green, and a touch of blue which balances it out nicely. It isn't iridescent; it's very sheer, and builds up nicely. The texture in the pan is silky, and applies well on primed eyes and stays put during the day. The color has a nice translucent luminescence, and blends well with other colors like darker greens and blues in the aqua family. This is a great color up to about a Thandie Newton complexion with brown, green or hazel eyes.

Day Dream is just that, a dream of a shadow, a richly pigmented perfect mauve with brown/gray undertones. Earthy with a hint of purple, not too brown, not too purple, just right, a perfect color for those of you with brown, light brown and even hazel/green eyes. The texture is so fine; it blended into my skin perfectly. The pigment is fantastic and the quality is top notch. It’s not too light, and it’s not too dark. It has a sort of pretty champagne shimmer to it. This is a great upgrade color for those who love to wear browns. Applied with a lighter touch, it could be worn during the day, but I mainly wore this as a night look. I absolutely love this glimmer! Nars Cream Eyeshadow in Zardoz

Description

Ok, you absolutely fall in love with an eye shadow. You try it, buy it, take it home, put it on and voila……in matter of hours your wonderful love has faded away, worn off, creased-up, or just plain smeared all over places on your eye that you didn’t intend for it to be in the first place. What happened???? I’ll tell you what happened. You didn’t buy Nars Cream Eye Shadow. In all truthfulness, it’s a “cream to powder” eye shadow. Not only does it stay in place (like most cream shadows), but it stays in place until YOU take it off…..okay? It absolutely won’t crease or fade away. The texture is great. The color is true. Aaaaand, you can wear it alone or use it as a base for a powder shadow…..please!

And wait….there are many colors to choose from, (my fave is Zardoz or ink black) so, you can be a diva in whatever facet you want to be. This product is affordable and lasting. That’s right; a little goes a long way. After searching for what seems like, decades, I believe I have found something that works well, with little effort. Try it, you’ll love it too. Now you can go out and work that look!" (via Sephora)

NARS Eye Duo Eyeshadow in Bohemian Gold

Updated May 18, 2007

2 people recommended this item

Description

I fell in love with this. It is a baby taupe and salmon duo. The taupe is light and frosty and the salmon color is reminiscent of a lighter version of MAC pink bronze pigment. I paired this duo with MAC gold dusk pigment on the browbone and MAC Accent red pigment in the crease and it made a pretty, sunset effect. I find the NARS shadows give off a very polished, mature but modern, professional look. What I like most is that they are buildable and blend almost effortlessly. The duo has a frosty taupe on the left and a shimmery peach/orange/tan on the right. The taupe side looks very dark in the pan and doesn't look like it works as a highlighter but when applied it lightens up. It also doesn't seem as frosty on the eye.

The right side has shimmer but it is muted so that it doesn't overwhelm. The two shadows blend very nicely together although I didn't think that they would on my face. I like the look that this duo creates. It reminds me of a warm sunny Autumn day because it doesn't have the glitz of summer. This is ideal when you want a neutral eye with a bit of spice if you are darker, and if you are in the Lucy Liu to Beyonce range, this will show much as a much deeper peach/tan and will be equally flattering" (via Sephora)

I am so in love with NARS colors, and this one did not disappoint either! This color is a deep metallic green & rich aubergine (perfect for FALL!). The formulations are creamy, smooth and blend very easily. Both colors are very true to what you see in the package – due to the rich pigments in these colors. This is great for an evening eye when you want something smoky, exotic and different and noteworthy, while still looking elegant. I would never normally think of putting a green and a purplish color together on the eye, but I have to say I really liked the change and it looks great on brown or lighter brown eyes as well. For a smoky look I did the green wet as a liner and then did a lighter layer of the purple color on the lid, with a thick coating of mascara which I got a lot of compliments on! (via drugstore)

Description

This is a very beautiful colour on me. It blends beautifully (if you are not comfortable using your fingers then use with a cream eyeshadow brush) and gives the most gorgeous sheen to my eyelids. The color read as more medium blue than grey with no shimmer on my eyelid. It did crease a bit as the day wore on, but no more than any of my other eye shadows do (I have oily skin) but it did not fade. I found that putting this under some of my other powder shadows (like darker greys and even dark blues), increased their staying power, and changed their dimension in a beautiful way.

I like the packaging also because it's so small and sleek. As for this color, I like that little snap of color on the outer third of my lid, with my brown eyes. I also think it looks great in the crease or over traced over an eyeliner for a more unexpected eye look. By using a skin primer or a dusting of powder underneath, this will help with creasing and staying power too. (via narscosmetics)
