Yves Saint Laurent Palette Couleurs D'Afrique

Updated May 14, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

It goes without saying that the design of this eye palette, like many of the YSL palettes, is exquisite, unique and truly beautiful.

But it doesn’t just stop there -- the colors themselves are wonderful and perfect for summer. There are 4 colors in the palette which were inspired by various African terrains. There is a deep chocolate brown (with a touch of eggplant), a true orange (with a touch of rust), a medium creamy yellow shade and a beige shadow. The brown and orange colors are bold, but were buildable if I wanted a more dramatic look. None of the colors has shimmer, they were silky and easy to blend and were a pleasure to play with and combine. The lasting power of the shadows was also good.

I didn’t think I would gravitate towards the orange shade as much as I did. The orange was very flattering and not shocking or over the top in any way. I loved combining the orange all over the lid in a light layer with the chocolate in the crease and as an eyeliner on its own or over my eyeliner pencil. I also liked using the yellow and beige for a softer look. These shades are varied enough with darks, brights and neutrals that it will work with all skin tones as well. There is a lot of shadow in the pan and each is very pigmented. This combined with the beautiful limited edition palette design makes it definitely worth the price. (via Palacinka)

NARS Hydrating Freshening Lotion

Updated Mar 17, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

I have always had high hopes that I would find a toner that would be worthy of the extra skin care step, but I have not always been impressed. However, after using this for toner for several weeks, I can say that this is a great product! It didn't irritate or dry out my sensitive/combination skin, or give me that tight feeling that some toners have. It also didn’t sting like some toners can.

This toner has a transparent gel texture and removed flaky skin in one swipe with no irritation. One squirt on a pad was enough to swipe my face (or just t zone). I loved the fact that it’s non-scented and didn’t make me break out. In fact, my face started to look amazing after using this product.

Putting this toner before my moisturizer greatly calmed those areas and my skin felt softer and looked healthier. Since my skin texture was better, my makeup application was more even and looked better. I loved that I didn't even have to use a moisturizer some days after using this.
NARS skincare also happens to have some of the best looking packaging I've ever seen among skincare brands. It is also a huge bottle, so it is completely worth the price tag. (via Palacinka)

Dreaming Tommy Hilfiger Lipgloss/Rollerball Duo

Updated Mar 13, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

This is a fragrance that is simple, but pleasant in its basic nature. It’s fruity, but equally fresh and pleasant. The initial notes on me were fresh peach – but not the sickly sweet and cloying type of fragrance. It is pale, clean and sparkling. This lasted a fair while. Then I began to get the flowery notes, such as tuberose, freesia, white hibiscus, white woods and orris. And it just got cozier and warmer as the time passed. I loved the tuberose in it in particular.

This fragrance is for the woman who wants "romantic and feminine" more than "sensuous and seductive". While it is girlie, it is not boring, it is sweet and calm and charming. For example, it’s perfect for church, brunch with in-laws, a wedding, and travel. The lasting power is very good (fragrance oil tends to last longer than EDT). I will definitely layer this will the larger bottle for everyday wear however. The roller ball contains the fragrance oil version of the scent. It is quick drying and not greasy, and I loved how I could pinpoint exactly where I wanted the fragrance to go with no muss, no fuss.

No, your eyes are not deceiving you…there is also a lip gloss included, which is a sheer cheery, flattering watermelon/cherry shade which was not too sticky, also had a nice peach fragrance, and looked great on many of our testers as it just warmed up the skin with that nice touch of color. Perfect idea for quick touch ups and travel! This is a very well thought out item with a lovely scent to match! I could not have been more pleased this, which was my first Hilfiger scent. Bobbi Brown Glitter Lip Gloss

Updated Jun 27, 2008

3 people recommended this item

Description

This is a very pretty lip gloss that is glittery, but not over the top in any way. The shade is a flattering creamy champagne peach with a touch of light brown (that looks great with the shades in the Bobbi Brown Nude Palette as well). This is meant to be a “your lips but better” shade, with a bit of kick to it. I generally wore this over one of the Bobbi Brown Nude palette colors, and also with other light brown/pink lip shades.

I loved that the gloss is not too sticky, gave a nice shine, felt light on my lips, and the glitter was not large or gritty. The glitter also did not “migrate” or flake off during the day, which I appreciated.

The staying power is excellent as well for a gloss. Since this is a sheer shade, if your lips are more pigmented, a base of light brown liner or lipstick will be needed to really see the full color, although the glitter particles do show up in any event. This will work to enhance any nude lip shade on all skin tones. (via Palacinka)

Yves Saint Laurent Eye Colour Touch - Steel Blue

Updated Mar 12, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

This is a lovely color from YSL’s spring 2008 Pop Romanticism Collection. It’s very true to the color described, as it was a very nice light gray/blue on my skin. A pastel color that did not make me look washed out. The formula was fantastic – light and airy on my skin and the shadow lasted all day without creasing or smudging. The pen applicator was so easy to use and quick too! About two swipes on each lid are all I needed. I sometimes finished blending with a brush, but it is certainly possible to still get a very polished look without it.

Another bonus is it’s also water resistant, so it wears very well in hot/humid weather. I loved pairing this with a soft rose on the cheeks and lips, which worked well for daytime, and with an extra coat of mascara and a high shine gloss on top of the rose lip for an evening look. This grey will work with all skin tones as it’s not a pale pastel; the blue gives the grayness depth that will show up on very dark skin tones as well e.g. Serena Williams – Alex Wek.

I would love to see them expand into even more colors for fall 2008! (via Palacinka.com)

Awake Hydro Manage Makeup

Updated Mar 12, 2008

Description

I have never been a big cream-to-powder foundation person (no particular reason, nothing really caught my eye before). However, after trying the Awake Hydro Manage makeup I’ve been converted!

When I applied the cream with the sponge, it actually felt like I was spritizing my face with cool water as the formula settled into my skin! At the same time it felt weightless and silky smooth. It was super quick to apply (with either the sponge or with my foundation brush). An hour after applying the foundation my skin looked flawless, natural and had an unbelievable glow and was moisturized as well. It gave me a sheer, smooth look, but did not look mask like or caked on. I also had no breakouts or dry patches. Note: This foundation gives light to medium coverage, so a fairly good skintone is ideal for this formula.

I recently took some pictures at an event and was really pleased with how great my skin looked with this foundation on. You can keep the case and simply purchase a new cream refill, which is also great for the environment and avoiding waste! This is one of the star products from the Awake line and any woman who wants a natural polished look with skin care benefits needs this. Worth every penny!” A.T.

Note: It is very important that the case is locked (lid/lock mechanism with dial closure which clicks when it’s sealed) after EACH use, or it will dry out due to air exposure.

Compact (includes sponge) and foundation must be purchased separately. (via Palacinka)

Giorgio Armani Sheer Pigments Fluid Blush #18

Updated Mar 6, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

All I can say is Wow! This is by far the star of the new Armani Beauty Spring 08 collection. I really loved this product (my first time using a liquid blush). This color appears bright pink (almost neon) in the tube, but it blended beautifully on my skin to a subtle rosy pink.

This was just perfect for an everyday look, and gave me an incredible glow. The texture is simply divine. It only took a few small pumps of the liquid on each cheek and my fingers (or a small brush) to blend in and achieve a perfect look every time. This blush was very easy to blend onto my skin.

The result was really polished and subtle. I also love that it gave me you a true glow, without being shimmery or looking greasy or shiny. The lasting power is also amazing. I was very surprised that this did not wear off quickly, since it is a liquid. This blush lasts as long if not longer than some of my favorite powder blushes!

The product is also versatile. I also mixed a few drops with my liquid foundation and even my tinted moisturizer which gave me an incredible look as well. Using it this way gave my complexion a boost and made me look radiant overall (I choose to do this in the evening especially). Since it’s so pigmented and not much is needed to achieve a look, this will also last a very long time, which is another bonus!

This is limited edition (spring 2008)…run don’t walk to get this one girls!”

Note: If you have very oily skin, this should be used sparingly. (via Palacinka)

Urban Decay Brow Box: Brown Sugar

Updated Mar 5, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

I am one of these women who is not great at home maintenance for many beauty services (manicures and brow shaping are the two that I always need to go to a professional for!). When I saw how cute and compact this box was, I figured this could possibly improve the way I maintain my brows in between appointments.

Well, I loved it! It was so easy to use, with small (about 2”in long), yet still effective tools and products that really made my brows look polished enough that several people commented on how great my brows looked --even when I was still a few days overdue for a shaping! The box contains a wax (in an innovative retractable mini shelf on the bottom of the box that opens with a soft touch of a finger), which helped hold my brows in place without looking greasy.

On the top shelf the box contains 2 shades of powder, tweezers and a mini brush for the powder. Brown Sugar’s powders are a dark chocolate brown with a bit of red, and a lighter beige/taupe shade (which you can mix to create a lighter brown if needed). The brow powder is very pigmented, very fine, and applied smoothly. It disappeared right into my brows. Using the mini brush and powder, I filled in the ends of my brows, and which still looked very natural, yet glam. This really enhanced my overall look, especially on those mornings when I didn’t have a lot of time to apply much makeup.

While it’s amazing to have such tiny tweezers included (and they did a nice job), some of you may prefer to use these just for traveling and continue with your normal-sized tweezer at home for increased control. This brow box is such a special little treat, but also an important part of my beauty arsenal now! (via Palacinka)

Guerlain Le 2 de Guerlain Mascara

Description

If you’re a packaging junkie you will love it, if you love thick, luscious lashes you will love it, if you don’t mind a little beauty splurge then you will be in heaven!

I was very happy with the new Le 2 mascara. It is a long gold tube with a brush on each end. One end is a small brush for small lashes on the inner corners and bottom lashes, and the other larger brush at the other end is for the upper lashes.

The larger brush did a beautiful job lengthening and defining my lashes with just a single stroke. I looked forward to using this mascara everyday; not only holding it but looking at the beautiful architecturally inspired gold design too!

What was new for me was actually applying mascara on my bottom lashes – I just never did it that much before.

However, after trying the tiny brush (which is tilted by 7° to coat the bottom lashes quickly and cleanly) and seeing the effect, I was hooked! The mascara formula did not smudge or flake and lasted all day and night. Yes, this really did give me the holy trinity - volume, length and definition, plus some curling power for those of you with very straight lashes like mine. The formula is also very moist and conditioning. Le 2 is luxury mascara that is worth every penny! (via Palacinka)

MAC Fafi for MAC- Lipstick in Strawbaby

Description

This is a sweet, unique color from MAC that I really liked. Strawbaby is a medium sheer coral/ berry pink which looked very light and luscious on my lips. It's not orange/red and it's not overtly pink either, which is great. It applied and wore closer to a gloss than a lipstick and I actually love that it worked as a hybrid. The formula was very hydrating, and the staying power was very good as well.

I also thought the micro glitter within it was fun. (Yes, please note there are some tiny glitter sparkles in this product are actually multi color rainbow- blue, purple, pink & silver flecks). However, I would still describe it as subtle and just fine for a daytime look, or even applied over a deep nude lipstick to change it up a bit, as I often did.

I found this to be perfect for when I wanted to have something on my lips that could look pretty and effortless. As a matter of fact, I was able to apply Strawbaby without a mirror many times when I was rushing and was always confident that it would look great.

I also liked the cute packaging and the plastic decorative sleeve of the Fafi girl over the casing. The Fafi image and logo is really fun! For those of you with darker, more pigmented lips this will still work, but you will still see some of the pigment since it is on the sheerer side. Another great aspect to this color is that it can also be seen as a low-maintenance red which you could wear anywhere and in any season. It’s the perfect versatile color for those of you not really into a true red lipstick. (via Palacinka)

MAC Fafi for MAC in Hipness

Updated Feb 29, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

If you are looking for a beautiful coral/pink shade this is it! I think this may be one of the prettiest shades in the whole Fafi collection as a matter of fact.

Hipness gave me a natural, coral/peachy-pink glow (no shimmer) on me. It's very pigmented, so all I needed was a light swipe of the blush (with my mac 129 brush) to give me a beautiful glow.
This is truly a beautiful blush with a nice, silky texture, making it very blendable.

Although it is listed as a frost, I didn’t see any shimmer on my skin (but it does appear there is a small amount in the pan). What I loved about this shade is that it really brightened up my face without calling attention to the fact that I was wearing blush. This will work best up to an Oprah shade.
Since this is limited edition, you may want to double up on this one! (via Palacinka)

Fafi for MAC Blush in Fashion Frenzy

Updated Feb 29, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

I was looking for a really nice pink blush that would “pop” and now I’ve found it! Fashion Frenzy is a matte, pink blush that woke up my whole face. This is very pigmented, so only a light application is needed to get the wonderful results.

Yes, many of you may already have a pink blush (or knowing our Palacinka readers, two or three!) but there is something very different about this one. This is a beautiful intense pink (with no shimmer). It gave me such a nice, fresh, healthy glow. It is very bright in the pot, so for a more subtle daytime look I used a light hand and a very fluffy blush brush. During my review period and even after, I always looked forward to reaching for this one.

For those of you with deeper skin tones (in the Serena Williams range, just a few more layers will still work beautifully since this pink is not frosty. Of course, the Fafi design and packaging are also just adorable. Another lovely product from MAC that is sure to sell out, so run -- don’t walk to pick this one up! (via Palacinka)

M·A·C 'Fafi' Eyes - Nordstrom

Updated Feb 29, 2008

Description

I have actually been a fan of Fafi’s work for some time now, so I was over the moon when I heard that MAC would be collaborating with her on a collection together. The packaging is everything a “girly girl” like me loves (and a collector’s item to be sure!). Note: The girls on the packaging are stickers, not printed on the case itself. I really loved all of these colors, and felt that they really did invoke the spirit of Fafi’s creations.

I used the eye shadows together and often separately. Hey, a nice shimmery neutral is a beige limited edition color which, on my eyelid, was very flattering. This color has great pigmentation was easy to blend. Howzat, which is a blueish purplely gray that blends like a dream was great for applying in the crease and lining my eyes for a smoky eye with a twist. The other colors in the quad are Vanilla (a nice highlighter) and Pink Venus (a fun crease and lid color).

I got so many different types of looks from this palette. I enjoyed using Pink Venus with both Hey for a hint of something fun, and with Howzat for a more dramatic night time look. For a more subtle, day time look, I used the Vanilla and Hey with Howzat as a liner. The Howzat, in particular is a soft, smudgeable color that wears for hours and hours, even without primer.

This palette as a whole will work best up to a Gabrielle Union shade, but some of the shades, like Howzat, will work well on all skin tones. (via Palacinka)

Butter London Nail Varnish in Prince's Plums

Updated May 25, 2008

Description

A knock out of a color!

This was the perfect combination of modern and edgy yet still sophisticated and quite a head turner of a color.

This is a gorgeous blue based purple that made me rethink wearing purple altogether. (I basically gave up any variation of purple cosmetics when I was about 13). One coat looked like a very metallic medium toned true purple (no shimmer). The color went on smoothly and I liked the wide bottle top brush for application. However, the second coat took it up a notch and gave it an almost hologram effect where I could then see various deep dark tones of inky purple as well as indigo blue depending on the light.

This color is when you want to make a statement, add to a sexy edgy fashion look or just to switch from your usual dark nail color. This looked amazing on our testers with lighter brown skin who had tans (think Christina Milan) and was also stunning on very dark skins (think Grace Jones to Alek Wek). The lasting power, as with all of the other shades I’ve tried, was excellent and it stayed shiny throughout the week. It also resisted chipping very well. This is also amazing on the toes for those of you too shy to use it for a manicure – you will still be sure to have people take a double take! Even my manicurist said she was going to order some for herself she loved it so much!

Butter London’s nail products are “3 Free Nail Products”, which means they do not contain harmful chemical products. There is no Formaldehyde, Toluene or DBP. (via Palacinka)

La Mer The Cleansing Foam

Updated Feb 22, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

Many people say that if you have washed your face with one cleanser, then it’s pretty much the same as any other. I beg to differ. True, there have only been a handful of cleansers which have really made me sit up and take notice; making a noticeable difference in my skin and my cleansing experience, but now I can add the La Mer The Cleansing Foam to that list.

With my first use, it earned a spot on my top cleansers list. It’s a powerful cleanser, while at the same time gentle and refreshing. As per the directions, I applied it over dampened skin. The foam has a silky texture and is pearly mint green. It smells very refreshing and uplifting. As soon as it is in contact with water, it started to dissolve and the color turns from green to white. It was very easy to leather up into foaming bubbles. After rinsing my skin, it was remarkably soft and supple. I loved the clean, crisp scent lingering on my face as well.

Many foaming cleansers I've tried did a good job washing away dirt and makeup. However, I found they tended to dry out my face afterward, especially on the cheeks. This foam is so rich and gentle that leaves my face thoroughly cleansed, soft and clear without being dry, tight, or irritating. After three weeks of use, I found the little black/white heads on my nose also decreased gradually.

La Mer The Cleansing Foam contains marine extracts, a combination of fine jade and white pearl powders, magnetized tourmaline, and their famous Deconstructed Waters. The exclusive combination of fine jade and white pearl powders is rich in amino acids to gently polish the skin for a bright complexion, which really made the difference.
This is truly a stand out product - mostly due to its gentleness and moisturizing properties. After washing my face, I always kept touching it because it was so soft and yet toned at the same time!
If you are wondering if these benefits are worth its luxury price, the answer is yes. As a matter of fact, because it’s so concentrated, a small amount is needed, so this can certainly work for a daily washing regimen. (via Palacinka)

LancomeColor Fever Shine - Pixel Pink

Updated Feb 22, 2008

Description

This is a fun color which is the result of the final Lancôme / Gucci Westman partnership. It just screams “Fresh, fun and perfect for spring”. I love the tube, which is slightly futuristic with transparent purple sides, and silver base. I actually didn’t know what to expect from this pink, as I am usually a “nude” lip person, but I was really happy with this medium blue-based sheer raspberry shade.

It's actually a bit brighter in the tube than it was on my lips because it goes on very sheer. The formula is creamy, smooth and light as a feather. This shade really brightened up my whole face, which was great on days when I didn’t have much time to apply more than this and mascara.

This color will work best up to a Nia Long complexion and because it’s sheer, will require those with more pigmented lips to add a bit of liner first. I found that this pink could be just as versatile and work almost as a neutral with many of my cosmetic looks. Yes, now I am a “Pink” girl! This is a must have and definite collector’s item for all lipstick lovers.” (via Palacinka)

L'eau Neuve by Lubin

Updated Mar 10, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

It’s hard to believe that this fragrance was initially released by Lubin in the spring of 1968. Lubin created Eau Neuve to capture the feel of that dynamic nonconformist era. I’ve always believed that things that are well built are built to last. And Eau Neuve is just such an example with their reintroduction of Eau Neuve. Now, as was it was then, this is a 'eau fraiche' featuring vibrant accents of citrus and herbs, which was viewed in the 60’s as a dramatic break from the classic perfumes which seemed too steeped in tradition for the Flower Power generation at the time.

This is now hands down my favorite new citrus-based fragrance. The oak moss grounds the citric notes are presented in a way that makes the whole composition seem very refined and grown-up. Not just clean and modern, but absolutely elegant and divinely French. The bright citrus notes - lemon, orange and bergamot – blended seamlessly with peppery lavender, chamomile and clary sage. There is a dose of spice and a hint of flowers and a nice base of wood, musk and oak moss. This still feels brand new. That's a perfect way to describe it. It’s fresh. It’s crisp. It’s clean. Yet there is still a lovely softness in the dry down that is quite unique even for today.

Unlike some of the overly simplistic Citrus fragrances currently on the market, Eau Neuve has a subtle and complex nature that is completely sophisticated and yes, will make you feel like a “French woman” every day! The lasting power is very good for a citrus (drier skins will have to reapply after a few hours however). This is great for day time, warmer weather and makes an amazing gift for the citrus lover in your life. As always with Lubin, the bottle is equally a work of art, giving the feeling of elegance and 60’s psychedelica at the same time.

Fragrance Notes:
Lemon Orange, Lavandin, Bergamot, Thyme, Camomile, Jasmine Flower, Rose Petals, Clary Sage, Coriander, Marjoram, Patchouli, White Musk, Eastern Red Cedar, Mysore Sandalwood, Oakmoss Resin (via Palacinka)

Ted Gibson Conditioner, Transformation Body

Updated Mar 10, 2008

Description

This is a citrus lover’s dream product! I have dry skin and am sometimes wary of using perfumed body lotions because they can dry out my skin more at times it seems. However, Ted’s Transformation Body did not do this at all. The texture of the lotion was almost that of a hair “conditioner” not exactly a lotion, but almost like a light mousse texture that is silky smooth and spreads on the body like a dream.

The fragrance was so amazing that many days I skipped any other fragrance to just continue smelling this grapefruit based scent (It’s still not super strong or aggressive). This is perfect because I liked layering other citrus based fragrances on top of this after applying and found they works unbelievably well together. The lotion kept my skin soft and supple and even worked on my stubborn parts like my elbows and knees. I can’t wait to try the other fragrances. (via Palacinka)

From the moment I flipped the top open my senses were blown away with this amazing grapefruit-based scent. The scent is fresh and bright and not too cloying or sweet. I always looked forward to using this in the mornings as it really was a lovely way to start the day. The texture of the shower gel is silky with a medium weight and very concentrated to a little goes a long way.

It made a nice lather with divine fragrance when the water hit it as well. The formula was also moisturizing for my body, so I didn’t feel stripped after I rinsed, but there was also not a “coating” or film left on my body, which I personally prefer. I love Ted’s elegant packaging with the beautiful flower motif on the bottle as well. Great new product from this line! (via Palacinka)

Yves Saint Laurent Beaute Limited-Edition Palette Pop

Description

What a lovely palette! From the beautiful embellished flowers on a light luminescent pale pink background, to the shimmery gold case, this was a joy to look at and to use. I loved using is as an accent to my peach or coral toned blushes.

The “pollen” center of the flower is a glittery hot pink (which actually goes on quite soft and complemented my skin tone nicely). I loved applying it on my cheek bones, and under the brow.

When I wanted to use it as more of an actual cheek color, I swirled the pale and hot pink together with the soft brown to get a very flattering medium pink with subtle shimmer. This is very pretty for spring and will work as a shimmer accent for all skin tones, and has enough pigment to work as an actual blush up to about a Nia Long complexion. (via Palacinka)

Lancome L.U.C.I EYES light color in motion duo eye shadow

Updated Mar 10, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

This particular product is the perfect marriage of product innovation, luxury, and out of-the-box thinking in terms of product packaging. L.U.C.I EYES light color in motion duo eye shadow in Apricot is a brilliant shade. It looked so vibrant in the “shell” that it is encased in. As a matter of fact, the shell itself actually has a heft to it such that you really feel like you have picked up an actual shell on the beach! I also thought the peal in the upper left hand corner is a brilliant touch and the shell like detail on the outside of the shell case is just beautiful.

As for the shadows themselves, I could do nothing but marvel at how the apricot when applied on my lid became this lovely mix of bronze, pink and copper. I often wore just this shade because I was so happy with it. But of course I wanted to try the white photonic shade that comes with it too at times. With just a touch of the white shade, the apricot became, pearly, iridescent yet not too bright. The way the light reflected off of the shade was amazing. I loved that essentially you can get three different shadow looks from this compact.

I could use the apricot alone, the white photonic eye shadow over it, the white photonic shadow alone (or as a highlighter on the brow bone) or sometimes I would get a completely different color by putting the photonic shadow on first, and then the apricot! This color will work with all skin tones, but if you are darker than a Serena Williams shade, this will work better as a highlighting shade, mixed with deeper coppers and browns. This is truly an innovation in color cosmetics, and a definitely collector’s item for the packaging as well. (via Palacinka)

Lancôme 'Ombre Glacée' Cooling Gel Illuminator

Description

The Cooling Eye Gel Illuminator is one of my favorite products from the LUCI collection. It’s a very light cream eye shadow that appears to be an opalescent pearl shade out of the tube, but as soon as it hit my skin it turned into the most beautiful combination or soft pink, peach and apricot, reflecting different colors wherever the light hit it. It was noticeable but definitely not too over the top or distracting. I loved the effect!

I used it on my brow bone on top of my cheekbones and even experimented applying it on top of a neutral power shadow. It really brought out my features. It very creamy in consistency and does have a very brief, cooling effect which was pleasant. I also applied just a little with a small brush on the inner corners of my eyes to brighten my entire eye area (great after a late night!). Because this color reflects light off of the skin, this looks great on all skin tones as well! On some people they will see more pink, others more of a peach or even violet tone at times.
