Typewriter Monster Mask
First to recommend
Description
Artist Jeremy Meyer created various sculptures and masks using the typewriter as inspiration, and the results are clever and should delight writers everywhere, at least those that remember the typewriter. This is the face of writer's block! (via Gizmodo via Wired)

Mad Men season one

Description
Mad Men is a gripping drama, but it is without a doubt the best-looking show of the last decade. From the title sequence to the perfect period wardrobes and office furniture, this show is sharp. Of course, I think it is a stroke of brilliance to release the DVD set in an oversize zippo lighter package, referencing the way that everyone smokes constantly during the show. Maybe season 2 will be packaged in one of those conical bras?

The Melancholic Singer print by Joan Miró
First to recommend
Description
This print demonstrates Miró's style in what I think of as his heyday, incorporating basic shapes with his familiar palette of colors. He was able to achieve a depth combined with whimsy that few of his contemporaries could rival. I would also add that a print like this omits added text with the artist's name and title of the work, or exhibition information, which in my opinion makes otherwise fine pieces of art look like $5 posters made for tourists.

The Girl Print by Joan Miró
First to recommend
Description
Late period Miró is so simple that it can fit anywhere in your home without becoming distracting, but bold enough to add a touch of color and vigor wherever you may need it. Although I personally prefer his work from the 30's and 40's, those paintings are a lot busier; if you prefer your decoration a bit more minimalist, a print like this might appeal.

Convection Print by Alexander Calder
First to recommend
Description
This print is simple enough to work into almost any contemporary decor (so long as it's not stainless steel and black leather, I suppose) but bold enough to catch the eye and attention of visitors. It's inexpensive, not too obtrusive at 26"x20", and pleasingly evocative.

Spirals and Petals, 1969 Serigraph by Alexander Calder
First to recommend
Description
Alexander Calder is best known for making the mobile a valid art-form in the 20th Century, but he also made prints. This is an attractive serigraph that won't break the bank. It probably won't appreciate tremendously in value, but for the price, it beats the hell out of some shiny poster of impressionism. This one definitely shows the life-long influence of Joan Miró, and would match well with any modernist theme you want to pursue.

Melody Crema Catalana

Description
Tired of Bailey's Irish Creme in your coffee? See if you can locate a bottle of this uber-sweet cream liqueur for a change of pace. I discovered this while living in Spain, and although its uses are somewhat limited, and it is shockingly sweet, I developed a taste for it. It does indeed taste like the dessert for which it is named, which is basically an even sweeter version of creme brulee with some citrus in it (it almost tastes like butterscotch, actually). On the positive side, this stuff is almost as smooth coming up as it was going down...

Kooks: A Guide to the Outer Limits of Human Belief by Donna Kossy
First to recommend
Description
I first came across this book years ago, and recently found a copy for myself, and it was as good as I remembered it. It's full of interesting and loony organizations, cults, conspiracy theorists, and otherwise nutty folks and their crackpot theories. Apocalyptic and messianic cults, weird science like the "Archive of Useless Research," UFO's and their true-believers, like the Raelians...you name it, and someone not only believed it, but convinced others to do the same. When you read it, it won't be about whether you believe any of these, well, kooks or not, but whether you can believe that anyone ever did.

A classic of B-horror cinema, and a truly creepy tale starring many real-life circus freaks. Of course it's exploitational! How else can you get microcephalics in your movie? You'll be haunted by the chant of "One of us! One of us!" Or, you'll just repeat it in any halfway appropriate context...for the rest of your life.

Pernod Pastis
First to recommend
Description
I truly enjoy pastis; it's a sophisticated tipple perfect for sipping, and it works in any season, warming in the winter and refreshing in the summer. Pernod began distilling this in France after absinthe was made illegal, so if you like, save your money on the recent influx of absinthes and grab a bottle of this (or its slightly less-sweet cousin Ricard) instead at half the price. It's best served with ice cold water added to the straight liquor in the glass until the it turns a cloudy, milky, and opaque. Chin chin!
