About rhondaspiegel:
Even when I was a little girl growing up in New York City in the 1950s, I made regular pilgrimages to the Museum of Natural History to peer at the gemstones. And so began my fascination with all that sparkled.
I guess I’ve always collected glittery things. I started collecting 50s eyewear before I knew I was collecting. I found glasses that I loved because I wanted to wear them. You wouldn’t have just one sweater. I couldn’t imagine having only one pair of sunglasses.
My passion began, not with a vintage pair, but with a contemporary 80s pair that was 50s derivative. They were glittery and orange with an old-fashioned, odd cat’s eye shape. But they were priced as $350 at I. Magnin, and I couldn’t bring herself to buy them. Finally, when the store closed, I bought them for $35.
My collection of vintage pairs followed. By the dozen. I now own more than 100 pairs.
Part of the appeal is my love of the hunt: the fact that these are one of a kind, and never, ever worn is incredibly exciting to me.
It seemed a natural segue for my passion to turn into a business. It all came out of a family joke. Whenever the family was together on an outing, we knew that at least one stranger would come up to me and rave about my eyewear.
One night I was at a cocktail party and, when a woman remarked about my glasses, I laughed and told her about the family joke.
“If everyone loves them that much, why aren’t you making them?”
So began Freize Frames.
