About Me
I'm a scientist so I'm always curious about the world around me. I enjoy this strange version of window shopping that ThisNext provides.
Influenced by my family who likes modern design, I grew up knowing the work of Noguchi, Eames, Marimekko, and so on. I've lived for short periods of time in England, France, and Japan. I read incessantly and too many of the walls in my apartment are taken up by bookshelves.
I am by no means an expert in anything other than my science.

What is the next...
Purchase you’ll make?
Something completely indulgent. Marzipan covered with dark chocolate. Something warm and fuzzy. A book to read in bed.
Trend in design?
Nanotechnology. Nano, nano, nano.
Car you’d like to own?
I love my own two feet and the subway ain't half bad. My bike is my friend, except when the gears are being testy.
Big step you’d like to make?
I'm going to clean my closets. Yes. That's a big step. Stop looking at me funny. Don't laugh at me. Ok, that does it, I'm going to go look at YOUR closets.
Fad that will fade?
Please, for the love of Mike, let the '80's fade away. The popped collars, the coke, the douchebags. The posturing punks. The puffy sleeves.
Vacation you’ll take?
I want to go someplace where I don't speak the language. Where people take long walks.
Thing you’re going to fight for?
truth, justice and ... wait, there was something else, but I've forgotten it. I'm starting to remember what the last phrase was. So happy to celebrate the coming inauguration of Mr. Barak Obama. We seem to have rediscovered the "American way" in the presidential elections this year. I hope I can return to liking my country again.
Secret that’s going to leak?
I think it is time for a big celebrity chef scandal. Rachael Ray caught nude, covered in puff pastry with Gordon Ramsey. Martha Stewart in a love triangle with Alton Brown and Bobby Flay - definitely something involving trapeze and organic produce from Washington State.
Hollywood blockbuster going to be about?
A modern version of one of those hugely cheerful Depression era films - lollipops and technicolour. Dance numbers with fruit headdresses and feathers. Maybe some kicky pyrotechnics.
Life you’ll lead?
Mad scientist
Fountain of youth?
Good apples directly from an orchard. Finger paints. Squirt gun fights in the summer. Running through a sprinkler. Plunging your hands into a giant bag of rice or lentils. Bubblewrap. Skipping.
Book you’ll read?
A lot of escapist literature: travel books, magical realism, worlds of other people's obsessions.
Thing that will change the world?
New anti-malaria and tuberculosis drugs. Enzymes replacing chemical syntheses using heavy metals and other unpleasant chemicals. Bacterially synthesized solar arrays. A better genetic understanding of diseases. Governmental support of the sciences without political spin.
Guilty-pleasure food in which you’ll indulge?
Cookies. It is always the cookies.
