Why stick with the Roman alphabet when you've got hiragana? This poster has everything I need to remember the hiragana I learned when I was ten (and promptly forgot, sigh).

WoOberry custom dolls

Transforming that drawing on your refrigerator into a doll. The wonderful monster with six heads that your child drew, or the enormous-headed picture of your eldest as done by your youngest. There's something just really awesome about this idea. (via Babygadget)

I like alphabets. There's something nicely cheerful about them. This poster from Ink + Wit could be used in a child's room or in a home without children. Calm clear colours and great animal silhouettes.

Etsy Seller : iPAPERCUTS

Updated Jun 1, 2008

Description

When I was elementary school, my teacher taught us to make paper cuts. We picked up exacto knives and thick paper and made all sorts of designs that she'd hang on the walls or windows of the classroom.

iPapercuts makes papercuts more spectacular than any we could have ever made. There's something about the limitations of cut paper that gives rise to some great artwork.

Trees, Zodiac symbols, and all sorts of animals.

Etsy Seller: ARTDSG

Description

Shelteriffic mentioned this Etsy Seller in an entry today and I was drawn to his lighting designs quite strongly. I recently moved into a new apartment and some previous tenant or the landlord removed all the lighting fixtures leaving me with a lot of bare bulbs, so this definitely caught my eye.

Nice warm wood in lights makes me happy.

ARTDSG also has some blocky paintings which would look nice in your home.

Words make art. I love how my eye moves over these tumbled letters in Jonathan Haggard's prints. Wonderful organic colours and strong shapes make these appealing.

Brenda Rose describes her art as two dimensional 3D art. She uses wood blocks for the bottom layer and plastic for the upper layer to create floating images above an organic base. This makes for some unexpected and fine art.

Thoughtful and strange watercolour visions of people and animals. These are the kinds of images that make you stop and think about them for a little longer than usual. There is a bit of the dark fairytale side of things to them, but it is entirely possible that I believed too much of Bettelheim.

Description

"Advice to sink in slowly is a series of posters designed by recent and established graduates of University College Falmouth for the purpose of passing on advice and inspiration to first year students.

A poster is given as a welcoming gift to every first year student when they enroll."

A whole series of posters with quirky advice, "Learn and instrument", "Collaborate", "Explore and experiment."

There is also a series of postcards of these posters. These would be great for people who enjoy a creative workplace. (via Metafilter)

Etsy Seller: Matt Cipov

Updated Dec 17, 2007

1st to recommend

Description

These prints are awesome. I generally try to characterize people's art and describe it well, but I'm failing here. Just saying 'zombies' and 'people wearing animal masks' makes it sound like a whole bunch of other lesser stuff. Not to mention 'owls.'

Anyhow, this is quite worth taking a look to see the prints. Cipov has a large collection of prints, stickers, sketchbooks, drawings, and bookmarks for incredibly reasonable prices. You can get a collection of four or five small prints for less than it will cost to get some of those nice Ikea frames to hold them.

Jun Gifts: Noren

Updated Dec 8, 2007

1st to recommend

Description

Noren are Japanese hanging cloth curtains or room dividers. They also hang in doorways. You may have seen them in a Japanese restaurant at some point.

Jun Gifts has a huge selection of noren ranging from really quite beautiful to not so much so. If you have an apartment, as I do, which at one point had large doors dividing the space and no longer does (pocket doors in Victorian era homes for instance) you can use these to separate the space. They can also be used as curtains or just wall hangings.

I especially enjoy the indigo dyed noren.

This company also has a large selection of furoshiki (piece of cloth to wrap packages or your bento box in), yukata (generally cotton kimono-style garment), daruma, and so on.

Quirky collage and prints mainly on blocks. I was immediately drawn to the one of teeth which was fascinatingly gruesome. Others are less odd and include a great print of the American Sign Language (ASL) alphabet, and a collection of bird silhouettes.

British Museum

Updated Nov 18, 2007

Description

The British Museum is making its collection available to the public through an extensive online database of scanned images. This is a great resource not only for academics but for those interested in design. Right now the resolution of many of these images is not good enough to print out poster size, but they promise to remedy that fault soon.

To find interesting images, enter a search term and check the box marked "Images only"

A quick search using the word 'snow' turned up a whole series of amazing woodblock prints from Japan, as well as a large number of images suitable for holiday cards. (via Metafilter)

Bjorn Wiinblad posters

Updated Nov 1, 2007

Description

Bjorn Wiinblad was a Danish artist mainly known for his ceramics. I've loved his posters and prints for years but had a hard time finding them in modern editions and an expensive time finding them on Ebay. I've found a nice collection of them at the Dansk Plakatmuseum for rather reasonable prices.

Wiinblad is a master of whimsy and colour. (via my grandparents)

The Dolan Geiman Depot

Updated Oct 28, 2007

Description

I get weary of the bird motif sometimes, but this guy knows his birds. He's got the Roger Tory Peterson cred. Which is like street cred, but different.

Silk screen paintings, collages as well as mixed media works have a lively creativeness. He combines found images into something cool. (via This Next)
