WoOberry custom dolls

Updated Jun 29, 2008

Description

Transforming that drawing on your refrigerator into a doll. The wonderful monster with six heads that your child drew, or the enormous-headed picture of your eldest as done by your youngest. There's something just really awesome about this idea. (via Babygadget)

I like alphabets. There's something nicely cheerful about them. This poster from Ink + Wit could be used in a child's room or in a home without children. Calm clear colours and great animal silhouettes.

Etsy Seller: Meeting Street Design

Updated Apr 4, 2008

Description

Ponytail holders and barettes that are just cute as heck. I want to order about a dozen different designs from Meeting Street despite the fact that my ponytail remains clenched with three all-purpose, no-nonsense black ponytail holders at all times. Maybe it is time for a change.

Ranging from silly and fun to elegant and sophisticated there's something here for your five year old and for you. Or perhaps your inner five year old.

Keesco Wooden Toys

Description

Detailed wood toys that you just want to pick up and play with. No matter how old you are. I'd love to give these to a kid just to watch them get excited about a backhoe. These are the work of a craftsman.

I found these when a friend emailed me asking for good wood toys to get another friend's baby. These aren't baby toys, but I have a feeling that when she gets a little older she's going to be running around with one of these.

Plate Works Design Your Own Plate Kit

Description

My sister and I did these as kids and my parents still have them. This is a great project if you have kids. Since you can send in pretty much anything as long as it is cut to the right size, this could also be a good design project. You know those neat plates you've been craving that cost too much? You could recreate something similar or do a wild design of your own.

Mangoes and monkeys are some of my favorite things. So are the prints that Mango n Monkey make. Playful prints and paintings of the cutest monsters you could ever hope to find. A trio of these, framed would make a wonderful baby shower gift. (Then again, I'm not the person who you should ask about baby shower gifts) (via Bloesem)

Pedia Pals: retractable ID clip

Updated Feb 27, 2007

1st to recommend

Description

I love my monkey ID clip. These were originally designed for pediatric doctors and nurses who need to have an accessible ID, but want to make the clip child-friendly. When I first got one, everyone at work was jealous, and I still get strangers asking where I got it.

They are fairly sturdy so are worth the higher price than the regular little blue ones that you get as give aways. The ID clips to a retractable string which lets you swipe it through the door security device, or show it to a security guard if necessary. (via Dolbey's Bookstore)

Settlers of Catan

Updated Feb 17, 2007

11 people recommended this item

Description

Settlers of Catan is an addictive, absorbing, strategy game. When you think of having friends over to play board games, you probably think back to being nine and having chicken pox and playing Monopoly with your best friend for three days straight. This is not something that requires you to be stuck inside and bored stiff to play.

Settlers of Catan is something you can play with friends and both congratulate yourself on your supreme nerdiness and actually really enjoy. There is no shame to it.

Although I still think that Scrabble is cooler. (via Fran and Vance)

The Children's Inn at NIH

Updated Feb 7, 2007

1st to recommend

Description

I worked at NIH (the National Institutes of Health) in Maryland for three years. I volunteered at the Children's Inn for about a year and a half. The Children's Inn provides a place for pediatric patients and the families of pediatric patients to stay near the hospital. There are rooms for the families as well as shared kitchen spaces, a computer room, several toy and game rooms, and a small library.

This lets the families of patients be with the family member who is receiving treatment, but not have to live in a hotel room, or drive miles to see the patient. Also, sharing space with other families lets people form a support network that might not otherwise exist.

The Children's Inn is an important part of NIH and it is run entirely on donated funds. If you are interested in volunteering, donating money or donating goods, take a look at their website.

Scrabble Deluxe

Updated Feb 1, 2007

6 people recommended this item

Description

Scrabble is intensely addictive. I think everyone should share my addictions. This particular scrabble set is quite nice. The board sits on a lazy-susan so you can spin it around easily during game play. This means that you can be infinitely lazy while playing scrabble, which is a good aim in life.

Scrabble is a great way to encourage kids to learn to spell well and increase vocabulary. However the greatest increase in vocabulary that I've experienced is in two letter and sometimes four letter words. As a kid, my mom used to beat me relentlessly at scrabble. Now, when I visit we get out the board and I beat her. She accuses me of cheating. (via My mom)
