The End of Mr. Y: Scarlett Thomas: Books
First to recommend
Description
It's got an almost-cliche premise -- it's about a poor grad student who stumbles upon an ultra-rare, supposedly cursed book and gets sucked into international intrigue -- but plot is really just there to vehiculate Thomas' clear, engaging, and accessible glosses on deconstruction, quantum mechanics, and abusive relationships. It reads with the same speed as books that have a lot less content -- it's a total subway blaster. You'll be done in a week and even if you think the ending's a cop-out, it's not like there's any easier way out of the many predicaments we're in now.

Listography Journal: Your Life in Lists

Description
Half the story is the drawings, which remind me of the way I used to draw in high school, back when I actually made time to let my imagination take over. The lists themselves are really fulfilling to do: List People You've Lived With ("Ben, aspiring bass player") and hey that's just the beginning. Good to do when you can't fully commit to journaling.

Em & Lo's Buh Bye: The Ultimate Guide to Dumping and Getting Dumped $14.95 : Chronicle Books

Description
Does what it says, with the added benefit of putting things in terms stark enough for the dumpee to understand all the reasons that not pushing it is in their best interest. Also encourages referring to the dumper as Fuckface, which is pretty cathartic, you know?

This is kind of a weird thing to think about, cos the album it leaked and I've benefited from the leak, and got lots of surplus enjoyment out of snagging this one down out of the ether, and I think it really stands up against the previous album as a huge, almost unexpectedly big leap forward for the band, but I also can't help but feel like Bradford Cox just wanted us once to be patient with this one. Not that impatience makes this any less impactful, but there's just a lack of respect. He gives away so much free music, and this is is moment, you know? The band's big and they maybe want to have a party but now it might feel like an awkward idea because when the physical album comes out, people might be over it but I really don't think this one will fade that quickly.

This is everything a planner should be. Crucial: printed in Oakland, soy-based inks, post-consumer recyclage, etc. Still more crucial: Lil O raises a big middle finger to the calendar year. Choose yr own adventure with this one. I need it to keep track of shows and work hours and for sourcing ideas for a tattoo.

Of course this is where I got the moniker I'm hiding behind and bla bla if you're looking for a place to jump into contemporary poetry this is probably one of the best ones. I dunno just yet how I'd wanna talk about its content or form or even if those two things exist as such for this book, but I do know that I miss this book right now like I miss a lover's body. Sometimes it's awful to have to say things like that, but the book speaks so clearly and yet runs your brain into the incredible contradictions of dailiness so often that it's hard to give yourself pause.

Way too expensive, and yet totally necessary. I try to do things in PureData and I just don't get anywhere. At least paying 500 bones would give me some sort of motivation to get my act together and figure out how to create, say, a ring modulator of some sort.

Who does not know this as a fannypack? I carry all my stuffs on a sling over my back even if I'm going into the city for like, a single show or whatever and it's not like my back is really that straight to begin with. I do not need that hardback book with me, or old paystubs or whatever else happens to be in my commuter bag at the time, weighing on my in this torpid vortex of unease. I need this to dance and occasionally conceal my Best-of Cameo tapes.

I would get these in purple if they weren't sold out. Usually I'm aligned more with West Coast skate style, but these are beastly.
