About Me

Asked to identify his first inkling that he would become an interior designer, Thomas Pheasant cites the summer he was 10 years old, when he cut the legs off his bedroom dresser, painted a wall black and hung mobiles he made with cut-apart Slinky toys and magazine covers. He remembers being mystified by his parents' design decisions to the point of indignation and thrilled by those of Rosalind Russell's Auntie Mame (whose surroundings metamorphosed with her fortunes).

A fourth-generation Washingtonian, Pheasant recalls being profoundly moved by the majestic proportions and materials of the Neo-Classical monuments that define his hometown. Indeed, his largely self-taught mastery of classical vocabulary and the confidence with which he has developed his own design dialect are what distinguish his style and provide the vantage point from which he can scan the horizon for the "unpremeditated, unexpected, perfect" result.

Pheasant debuted a 19-piece line of rattan, leather and textured bronze furniture for McGuire this year: he also designs a recently expanded collection of furnishings and fabrics for Baker. "I can no longer imagine doing anything else," he says. "No matter how many clients, assistants, contractors and subcontractors I find myself managing, if my artistic side is evolving, well, that's the engine that pulls the train."
