Neat Receipts is a portable scanner that serves as a "get that paper out of here" organizational tool. It's a not only a portable scanner, but also includes some handy software (Neat Works) that uses OCR to sort your receipts, business cards, and documents into a handy filing system. It can also scan into PDF format. On top of that, receipt information can be exported easily into spreadsheets and (apparently) tax forms. I have not used the tax form features yet, but my luck with the device and software have been good thus far. The interface is clean and simple, but because of the functionality, it takes a bit of time getting things sorted the way you would like them. On the other hand, once you're comfortable with your set-up, the process is a breeze. This is not an inexpensive product, but I'm keen on portability and ease of storage. The only downside I've experienced so far is that the device seems to require calibration more often that I had anticipated. But that's no big deal and it takes less than a minute to do. There's another product called Neat Desk which sits vertically and is basically a sorting feeder. It's pretty expensive at about $500, but I have to say with the ease of use that Neat Receipts provided, I imagine the price tag would be worthwhile for people who have a lot to organize and file.
