Is it necessary? No. Is it fun to hear the baby's heart-beat in the womb? You bet it is!

Although you can hear the sound very well, it's not terrific at reporting the actual numeric heart-rate - for that you'd really need to spend a lot more money. But as a discount (relatively) home-use tool (really a toy) this is perfect...
