I think it is important to have a water filtration device that can be trusted time and time again. I would not let the concept of responsible back washing turn you away from this device. It has been improved and altered to give the best quality water out there now. The millions of straws have follicles that ensure you will not get anything "nasty" in your water, or stomach.
