  The @ symbol has been around at least since the Middle Ages, but it has never been more ubiquitous than in the past decade. Graphic designers have melded it into numerous decorative objets, Internet gurus made it a standard part of our email addresses and, most recently, Twitter co-opted it as the lead-in of tweeters and followers.
