Face it, nobody looks cute carrying a plastic bag, so consider investing in Bag the Habit's sturdy and chic shopping totes, instead. (They're made partly from recycled materials and are recyclable, to boot.) The United States goes through 100 billion plastic shopping bags annually, requiring an estimated 12 million barrels of oil. (Less than 5 percent are recycled.) These billowy menaces clog up our oceans and smother marine life. In fact, our love affair with disposables has bred a swirling vortex of plastic trash the size of Texas in the North Pacific Ocean. Who needs that? Not us.
