Chumby

 Chumby - Photo

It's a cheap, little, hackable photo-frame-form-factor device. Seems like it might make a nice alarm clock.

Nice - looks like a really interesting device. I noticed it on ThisNext after reading a review of it by Dave Winer.

After some hands on time with this device, I'm recommending it. Its a small, not too expensive little computer with a wireless internet connection built in. It also has an accelerometer built in for games. It kinda looks and feels like a bean bag. By visiting Chumby.com, you can create an account and choose which 'widgets' or 'channels' to stream to your chumby. There are loads of clocks, but also things like weather forecasts, RSS streams, words of the day, little games, even a simple photo viewer for your Flickr or Photobucket account. There are quite a few widgets already and the development is open-source, so expect more to come. Those with Linux know-how can play around with the insides. Cute idea in a cute package.

I've had mine for a month or two, and highly recommend the Chumby. If you develop in Flash, it gives you a reason to make new widgets for the community and brush up on your Flash Lite app. list.

Meet "chumby" . . . your wireless connection to a world of widgets. Not your average gadget, chumby displays alarm clocks, weather updates, games, cute graphics . . . and has more treats yet to be released. Available in espresso, pearl or black. Each chumby arrives with its own set of amoeba-like charms, with others available for purchase.

I first saw the chumby on Wired.com's review of gadgetry that's off the beaten path. With its amazing range of useful stuff, radio, alarm clock, media player, internet thingy and probably the coolest internet ready device ever. First, some tech specs: 64 MB NAND FLASH ROM 320x240 3.5" TFT LCD with LED backlighting Touchscreen input Stereo 2W speakers with hardware mute Headphone output with headphone presence detection Microphone input with programmable AGC Squeeze sensor 3-axis Accelerometer (+/-2g range @ 12 bits resolution) Three USB 2.0 full-speed 802.11g connectivity Put chumby by your bed and wake up to your music, either the radio or internet music like shoutcast. Get your RSS info ready, with all the information you need before you even get out of bed. There's way too much stuff to talk about the Chumby, because it's got a loyal following of modders, hackers and programmers. Yes!! there are widgets and a lot of ways to personalize and modify your Chumby. It's a strange name, but like TiVo, it's one of those things that you never knew you needed until you got one.

I really appreciate seeing the specs. I know I could look them up on the info site, but it's nice to see them in the review and know what the reviewer is commenting on. Thanks!

I can't help but think that everyone is gonna want themselves a chumby. don you want a chumby? I bet you do. You just don't know it yet. Wait 'till you see your best friend's sister's girlfriend's brother's half-aunt with one. Then you'll want one. And I will get to say "I told you so." Go widgets, go.

Inexpensive internet addict device! This "alarm clock" on steroids lets you chose what parts of the intarweb to stream to it, so for example when you wake up you can check the weather, the latest videos on Youtube, your favorite RSS feeds, your email, and on top of that, look at totally adorable images from icanhascheezburger.com. This device is awesome!

I love my Chumby! The only issue I have had with it is relatively poor Wi-Fi reception (compared to my laptop). However, this is a great little device. Very well done.

Yeah, I have been pretty unimpressed with the wi-fi performance. I read some comments from people who had good luck with wi-fi signal boosters. I may give that a try...

This little digital bean bag is so cute and fun. My uncle owns one, so when I visited him last week, I had a chance to play with it. It displays all kinds of fun widgets and applications from the internet. It also has games that keeps my toddler son occupied for hours. I couldn't get him to put it down! It comes in three colors to compliment your home decor.

"This may be the final nail in the coffin of the morning paper. The Chumby combines the functions of an alarm clock with a full suite of widgets that streams everything from sports, stocks, news, weather, youtube, twitter, etc. Connect to your wireless internet and you might not even need to get out of bed in the morning to catch up on the world. It's even fist-sized so you can easily throw it for waking you up."
