Plug in and forget. I have no idea if other switches work better or worse. All I know is I've never had to worry about the Netgear gigabit switches so I keep buying them.

I too can vouch for the reliability of the Netgear unmanaged switch. Plus they look good, and they're cheap.
I haven't had any problems with their managed switches either.
