In the Heights - The Musical - Official Site
If you're in New York City and you can spring for some cheap seats, you should check out In the Heights. It's about two days in the life of Dominicans and Puerto Ricans in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan. The music is an incredibly addictive blend of merengue, salsa, rap, and reggaeton. Any native New York City girl (or boy) will recognized the sites and sounds of In the Heights. The dancing was great, the acting very good, and the book was good. It is a Tony Award winning musical, and was featured in a minor plot line on a recent episode of Ugly Betty. There is a scene where Usnavi pulls up the gate of his bodega, and I was taken back to the hot summer mornings of my youth when insomina had me up with the sun and the only sounds I could hear were the metal gates going up and the empty bus rattling by.
