It sounds like it's related to those fake-red cherries you get in bad manhattans, but this brandy-like liqueur is made from Italian Marasca cherries... and tastes like nuts and fruit. It's a key ingredient in classic cocktails like the Aviation and The Last Word.

Luxardo is one of many excellent Italian liqueurs/aperitivi that are largely overlooked. Not sickly sweet like the maraschino cherries that have hijacked its namesake, it's got a complex flavor of nuts and cherries. (via Anita)
