I used to be a swiss army knife guy until I got a Leatherman Wave- the wave is simply a better tool. One handed (locking) blade deployment and pliers are the standout features.

The downsides: shitty scissors (compared to a swiss army knife), no tweezers/toothpick, and a redundant selection of flathead screwdrivers.

Multi-tools are a good stand in but aren't as good as the real thing. That said, having one of these in your backpack or in the glove compartment can mean the difference between a temporary inconvenience and a total pain in the butt.

They are also good gifts for just about anyone - even your female friend who gets a weekly manicure for herself and her bichon could use this.
