FOR SOURCE MATERIAL: Over a decade ago, I read somewhere that Willa Cather habitually read some Bible before she started her daily writing so I did the same. It's a very absorbing text, and I prefer the NIV Study version, because their footnotes are fantastic. Genesis is riveting. My favorite story is about Joseph (you know, the one with the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical). If you like the Old Testament, Robert Alter's recent translation, The Five Books of Moses, is very rich.
